My wife went to Haiti a few years ago as part of a dental group to provide free services (ala Dr.'s w/o borders.) We did quite a bit of research on Haiti before and after her trip. She said it was like a 4th world country - besides the crime, people just did not give a shit about anything - including improving their station in life. She said flying over the island, it was obvious where the border was because the earth was essentially stripped bare on the Hatian side of the border, and forest on the Dominican side. She said there were just huge mounds of trash everywhere.

After looking at the situation, Haiti has been a "darling" of organizations like the Clinton Foundation. They get so much foreign aid, they have no motivation to improve things. The US gave ~$110 million to them in fiscal year 2023. In total, they've received ~$13 billion in the last 10 years.

My late uncle did a considerable amount of mission work in Haiti over the last couple decades. While he always said he felt safe, he did mention that place always felt right on the brink of chaos and precautions always had to be taken.

Sad to see after his efforts and those of many others, but what happens when lawlessness is allowed to take over.
