and shot my .45 today without hearing protection, putting about 100 rounds through it. I was outside and its been about 4-5 hours and the ringing is still pretty bad but i can hear a little better. any suggestions on what I should do? and does anyone know if this would be permanent or not?
I have permanent firearms related hearing loss. From talking to the specialist I see for the problem it happened in my youth when I would shoot at doves with a shotgun without hearing protection. I didn't begin to notice the effects until past my 50th birthday. The specialist recommended a hearing aide that I have put off looking into but I'm not sure how much longer I will be able to do that. I learned a difficult lesson and strongly recommend that everyone always wear hearing protection when firing any weapon.

How can you guys shoot without protection on your ears?? Last time I forgot to put mine on I only got one shot off from a 38. That was some pain. I forget occasionally, but the first round is a painful reminder.

Same here. Done it a few times years ago, but not any more. Minor ringing from time to time, but thankfully not constant.

I am much more careful now. I keep ear buds in my hunting bag, and before touching off the '06, I put em in.

Take care of those ears boys, you get only one pair issued.

well mine are good :P do they have ones that are electronic and the same size as foams? what if you are gettin return can you hear that or does it cut it out? i know they say you can hear people talk i just never tried one.

Electronics are always (AFAIK) muffs. I can't see wanting to wear plugs for 14 hours at a shot, anyway. They cut out as soon as you get a noise that's at hearing damaging levels. Good electronics will still give you good stereo to tell direction, too.

Fun fact I remembered this morning - there's a reason why hearing loss is the most common disability among veterans.

yes there is, because the commercial side hasnt made an electronic earpiece :-|. i dunno, they are giving ones that are better than before but they still suck. maybe if they stopped trying to r&d dumb invisible cloaks and computerized small arms we could get some good protection we would actually wear.

Nothing personal but you and all the others blasting the F to everyone else who doesn't want to hear your stereos earned poor hearing. Deal with it and don't complain.

What an incredibly rude response. I suppose you never did anything in high school that you later regretted.

Ok so everyone is saying the ringing should go away after a few days since this was my first incident. What about my hearing? When people talk it sounds like im wearing ear muffs but im not, will that go away after a few days? And also i noticed last night that i couldnt hear my car beep when i lock/unlock it bc of the certain frequency i guess. And this morning i checked it and i can hear it now but it sounds a little different

I started wearing two hearing aids in 92 .
When I started shooting we never heard of or even thought of hearing protection in th late 50's early 60's
    and I'am paying the price.
    Always wear some protection.

lol, no i think that would be considered cruel or something. my point was, everyone is going ape shit over a one time thing. i guess, i understand why though, to stress the importance. ah well.

Yes, it's to stress the importance. As has been said many times, hearing damage is cumulative. If you treat one time like it's no big deal, then what's one more time? And maybe once more after that? And so on.

Good luck. It sounds like you're improving. That's a good sign. All you can do at this point is pray, wait, and schedule a doctors visit if necessary. Hopefully you're back to 100% in a couple of days and just get to learn a lesson instead of suffering from one.

No, I've never made the mistake of jamming my music down the ears of those who'd rather not hear it month after month. I find that disturbing of my peace incredibly rude. Mind you I'm not referring to your current position however, I stand by my previous comment.

link me! i might look into gettin a few for my unit. most likely a pair for me thoughm

These work well, and at under $20 for a pair are pretty cheap insurance. They are fairly comfortable if you get the correct size. They aren't electronic but they have the capability of accepting radio earpieces if you need it. If you leave the little plug out of the center you can hear normal conversation.
