It is not their first try. It is their second. First try was google maps, second try is tomtom. They changed to a worse map provider. Oops.

Google maps were licensed by Apple, so AAPL didn't write or control the code. And in a GOOG vs AAPL world, AAPL does not like writing checks to its competitor. Licensing tomtom is a little less offensive. Over the past few years AAPL made some acquisitions for map technology companies. This is their first time at controlling the technology, so they say. It should let them integrate the maps with their other apps, and if they pursue an aggressive release schedule, the next iterations should be better. If you don't like AAPL maps, blame AAPL, not tomtom. But long term, it makes more sense for AAPL to build their own maps.

tomtom does not have the detail google maps has. Get a tomtom GPS and you will see the same problems in lack of detail. garmin is not much better. The problem is these companies design maps for road directions, not for viewing.

Pros on the maps switch only apply to the 4S and 5.
Cons: traffic view sucks compared to gmaps. Only shows red, doesn't show yellow/orange conditions.
No public transit in apple maps.

Lots of stuff missing or outdated. Street that was demolished 2 years ago? Still there. Statue of Liberty? Not there.


Also, I synced ios6 with Facebook. Contact list went from 60 contacts to 496. I only have 291 fb friends. Explain that.

Hoping to get a 5 sometime soon. The 4 is still running, but the storage is getting sparse.

I'm still running a JailBreak of 5.0.1

I hate to upgrade then JailBreak then reinstall all my Cydia hacks.

Guess I'll be using 5.0.1 for a long time
