I've never understood .40S&W. Seems like an "administrative round" to me.

If you want a .40, buy a 10mm. If you want a weak 10mm, download it or buy downloaded ammo.

With modern loads, the 9mm is fine. If you need more power, use the .45acp.

The .357 Sig (parent cartridge, .40S&W) is an interesting round and, truthfully, makes much more sense for an "administrative round" than the .40.

    Regards,
    Josh

10mm requires a larger (sometimes much larger) grip compared to 40sw and the 40sw is the 10mm FBI load.

Magnum Research BFR in 45-70 Govt. or 30-30 may be too tame, but worth looking into.....at about 1k still reasonable, imho....

They are pretty massive and the inertia of the gun itself soaks up a fair amount of recoil. 45-70 is pretty gentle even at maximum pressures for the cartridge. Theoretically you could load it to .500s&w mag pressures as the BFR's cylinder can handle it, but I'd expect you would have case failures.

I'd love to carry 10mm but the gun selection is so limited (glock or 1911) and then there is the price it's 50% more than 9mm. Then there is.. ... Well I'm the size of a 12 year old so unless I OC I can't really carry a 10mm pistol.

There are more non Glock, non 1911’s Tens out there than you may realize.
Just off the top of my head:

    Witness
    Grand Power
    Sig P220
    XDm as mentioned

    Revolvers:

    Ruger RedHawk
    Ruger BlackHawk

Out Of Production, but found for sale online:

    SW 1000 series (I think 4 models?)
    SW 610 revolvers

    Wyoming Arms
    AMT
Bren Ten, the original Ten (if you have an extra $3-5 K to turn loose)
Springfield Omega, (technically not a 1911 because of the linkless barrel, but it is basically a cool 1911.)

It’s almost 7:30 am and I haven’t been to bed yet, so I’m sure I left some out.

Think the 10 mm would come closer to winnng the administrative round award. It was supposedly invented in the aftermath of the nasty old FBI gun battle in Floridddy a couple of decades ago where several of them got killed by a couple of bad guys one of which used a mini .14. The good guys had .38 snubbies and one 9 mm highpower in the mix. Due to liability issues it behooved the FBI to decide there wasnt any good choices in the market place which would have been better than what they were already toting..so the 10 mm got birthed. They loaded it up too hot...which shot the guns apart and its kickback did not agree with the girls and girly men on the payroll..so up comes the 10 mm light called a .40 SW. The .357 Sig seems to be a .40 SW case with a 9 mm bullet.

Yes in fact. It was used specifically to handle grammar poleece on Alfgores internet chat boards. lol. The misplaced decimal point was actually a period to denote mini. was an abbrevaton of miniature. lol.

The 10mm existed prior to the Miami shootout.

Once the FBI adopted the 10mm they found the girly agents couldn't handle the recoil so they downloaded it. Then Smith&Wesson realized they could offer the same energy level in a shorter round so the .40 Short and Weak came into being.

The FBI actually wanted and used a 1076 S&W in 10 mm full-power loading for awhile but switched because the women agents, in particular, could not handle the recoil.

Negative, full power 10mm never made it into the starting gate, rejected immediately.

The FBI switched to a reduced power 180-grain load that morphed into the 180-grain .40 S&W round load.

Correct but as state above, the switch took place during the trials. a 10mm 180@950 fps was the selected round. S&W then created 40S&W based on this load.

This is all documented in FBI/LEB November 1989.

I can say that they don’t exaggerate on the claimed velocity. I chrono’d mine and despite having a large ES, all rounds were above what Armscor advertises.

I wanted one of the rifles but they never really materialized. Heard rumors that a few existed but never actually saw one.

There were a couple of review samples sent out. I remember reading a couple of reviews.
