I’ve mentioned this before......my folks raised pecans commercially.

Being an amateur botanist, my mom & dad suggested I attend a few Texas Pecan Growers Association meetings and take pecan orchard management courses at A&M Ag (so he could use me as free slave labor-he thought he was slick) The end result being I heard the word pronounced by academics, botanists, and people from around the US and Mexico.

Smart people/Western US/Texas/Cajun - puh cahn

Hillbillys/East Coast/Georgia/Bama/Sippi - pee can

Mexico - Mescan

Regarding the amateur botanist thing, I walked into my grandfathers greenhouse when I was a little kid and was smitten by the orchids, bromeliads, succulents, and staghorn ferns that he grew. Been a hobbyist off and on ever since.
