Before California became the Peoples Socialist Republic, we used to be able to varmint hunting out in the high desert for nothing more than the cost of the fuel we had to buy to get out there. We could just drive out to the valley to our usual site, set up camp, and walk the valley for varmint. Is there anything or anyplace like that here in Texas? So far I've only been able to find guided hunts and the like on private land. Is there any BLM or open land where someone can camp and hunt?

Closest you'll get is certain wildlife management areas. Still have to buy a hunting license and get the permit(free). Bow hunt or shotgun with rules regarding maximum shot size. #4 I think, and not buck.

If you hunt any of the public lands, you have to get the public lands permit and hunting license. Permit is $48 i believe. If born after 1972, you need hunter ed card on you as well as hunting license. To see if it is worth it to you, go to TPW website, sesrch public lands. Some love it, some think it sucks. All depends

Fools Gold (aka PhulesAU), I find it simply amazing how you were able to completely miss the subject matter of the question. Tell me, just how loud is the pop when your flare up of rectal cranial inversion goes into remission?

All the lands around me are free permit from corps of engineers, after you pay all the other fees that is.

Corps areas and Texas public hunting lands are different for the most part. Some corps land is part of the Tx public lands though, like granger. I think there are areas of Belton lake you can hunt hogs on but Stillhouse is bird only, shotgun only, no Turkey. But yes, there are quite a few corps properties you can hunt free. You are right. Some have restrictions, some don't. Same with public lands.

I'm getting an understanding about hunting here. I would have to revise my original question to simply "are there any public lands here in Texas where one can varmint and camp?" Which you guys have answered and I do thank you. I'm not really one for guided hunts, big game, and lodges. Looking more to get the hell away from everything with a friend or two shoot critters.

Check with the corps, there are some. Would not swear to it, but I think some camping on some public lands. I know Granger lake has camping nearby.

Didn't miss a thing. even the fact that ALL of the question you asked , could have been answered by checking the Parks and wildlife website. But you choose to prove your laziness, and post here. you wanted someone to do the work for you. And my head won't fit far enough to 1. complain about Texas or 2. admit I was from California or 3. compare the two in any way. POP

The only problem I have with "you could have googled that" or "you could have called....." Is that pretty much every question asked on this forum has already been answered somewhere or could be answered by calling someone.

Isn't the point of a forum to provide easy access to information, including the collective knowledge (and opinions) of those on the forum?

Kinda what i thought. I know if i tell my customers to google it, i won't have any. Not to mention being an even bigger jerk than i already am.

I would never tell a customer to google something. However TPW makes it easy to get the official answers, this place is where you can verify Official vs. reality. This is my answer index of last resort. My search foo isn't the best, and the longer I live the worse it gets. BUT I can within a few minutes, find the basic answers. Refusal to do even cursory searches is well..... A pet peeve, and I'll leave it at that.
