    Gunz are icky.
The answer to your question OP is NO.
There are no open lands in Texas. Anywhere. It is all private or .gov controlled. It isn't like the western states with free and open access.

I would never tell a customer to google something. However TPW makes it easy to get the official answers, this place is where you can verify Official vs. reality. This is my answer index of last resort. My search foo isn't the best, and the longer I live the worse it gets. BUT I can within a few minutes, find the basic answers. Refusal to do even cursory searches is well..... A pet peeve, and I'll leave it at that.

I can agree with you on that

I believe you can use shotgun at certain times, otherwise, I think You are correct. That is why I said, some love it, some don't,

Ya some of these places have some goofy rules especially when it comes to piggies. Can't hunt piggies unless you are there to hunt doves is one I'm seeing alot. Seems like the closest place I can go for just straight hogs is all the way in Luminant which is about an hour and 45 away. Why are these places so restrictive on the number one nuisance animal in the state?

For a lot of the same reasons landowners are.

    Way out here
Before California became the Peoples Socialist Republic, we used to be able to varmint hunting out in the high desert for nothing more than the cost of the fuel we had to buy to get out there. We could just drive out to the valley to our usual site, set up camp, and walk the valley for varmint. Is there anything or anyplace like that here in Texas? So far I've only been able to find guided hunts and the like on private land. Is there any BLM or open land where someone can camp and hunt?

OP, how does this work in California? How do you keep from getting your ass shot by JoeBob and his kids on the next dune over who decided to slurp through a 12 pack of beer before they start varminting? What's the size of the piece of land you're driving out to?

    35Remington,

Most of California is empty, particularly the central valley. We would drove out to a spot west of Bakersfield called the Chorizo Plain. Nothing out there. For a long time, there were ranchers who ran cattle and sheep through the valley. On occasion one of the ranchers would happen by our camp and talk with us. But for the most part we were alone.
