Kel-Tec's line of pistols are made in Florida.

I came in here to post exactly this. I've called them twice and both times spoke with someone in Florida, not someone overseas with an accent I could not grasp. I'm not particular about buying American made products, but it is nice when you need to talk to someone and you can understand them clearly.

You could also look at STI. They make a nice 1911 or two in 9mm right here in Texas. Springfields are made overseas unless the serial number starts with NM. Even then the frame and slide still come from Brazil. It is just fitted and assembled here.

The M&P is a good gun. I would highly consider one. The triggers out of the box just plain suck. I've shot one that had a thousand or so rounds down the pipe and the trigger was world's better. I'd imagine they have rough mechanisms or rub the frame and over time they smooth out alot.

The pull in a striker fired gun is like a SA revolver pull with about 1mm of creep before the gun fires and a ~5# pull weight. It's no 1911 or S&W SA feel by any stretch, but they can be corrected ALOT easier than those two choices.

Just keep in mind that not all their guns are US made. GP6 for example... I don't really get hung up on buying only American, but I can understand why the OP would want a US made gun.

The Spartan, Texican, and GP6-Series are the only guns not made in the US, for a quick reference.

The remainder are produced in Georgetown, TX.

Ruger. The SR9 looked interesting to me. It is an American company, though I don't know where they are made.

Does STI make a 9mm 1911? They are here in Texas.

In reality, I think you are going to find that no matter what gun you buy, something will be not be American. Heck, the Toyota trucks are made here in San Antonio. I'm pretty sure my Beretta said made in USA on it.

And yes, all the striker fired pistols I have fired have a much lighter and shorter trigger than a true DAO pistol.

Yes, STI makes a 9mm 1911. Trojan, Guardian and several others. www.stiguns.com BTw, I love my STI Trojan in 9mm.

    Thanks Malladus and Pete.

As far as American made, I am looking for something assembled in the United States - you can never really know where every single component is made, so I don't sweat that too much. I prefer something designed in the states, assembled in a factory in the states, although an overseas company that puts a factory over here and employs Americans to build a gun will also get my preference.

As far as Springfield goes, at least the XD (which I think is a very nice looking gun) is made in Croatia.

As far as the striker fired as opposed to DAO, how does that relate to trigger pull length and weight? My best comparison would be to a Wesson model 14 revolver which is a whole world of difference when shot DA compared to SA. Would the striker fired M&P be similar to firing said revolver DA every time? Or is a striker fired usually a lower pull length/weight compared to a revolver?

STI International - STI Made in Texas! F_I_N_E quality for an American made 1911 style pistol in 9mm. As Col. Cooper admonished, DA in a defense pistol is a marvelous solution to a non existent problem.

I just bought a used Smith & Wesson 908 single stack 9mm. It is a all metal gun and great shooter. If you have a CHL is easy to conceal since it fairly thin. I don't know if it made in the US, but it still being sold by S&W and listed on their website. Category - Metal Frame

Thanks for all the input folks. I'm digesting it all and reviewing some of this online and trying to get to some shops to pick some of them up and see how they feel.

Been leaning towards the SR9 or the M&P 9 and hadn't really given much thought to the 1911s. But the guy at one of the shops brought me over and had me pick em up and feel some of the 1911's out. They sure felt good in the hand and I liked the feel of the trigger on these much better than the SR9 or M&P9. Too bad they are running about 2x the price of either of these....

Thanks again for all your input. I appreciate it.

Mic, with an STI Trojan 1911 in 9mm, you have a potential tack driver. Yes,it's about a grand, but by the time you whistle and bell whatever else you might buy, you'll be close to that and the Trojan will still be the better choice in my estimation. Those Trojan's are just scary accurate. Quality is a major factor in my book. STI is as high quality fit and finish as guns twice their price.
Go to a gun range and try a Trojan. Those other guns you're looking at will get the job done, the STI will be more accurate and has a great sense of pride of ownership, for me. Had some after market mods done to my .45 Trojan and customer service is Way above excellent.
No, I don't work there, just a loyal Texan buying from a superior Texas Company. I love my Escort and LS9, also.

My primary carry gun is my MP 9c and my other carry gun, depending the weather and on how I'm dressed, is my S & W, 442 snubbie, with Crimson Trace laser grips loaded with 38+P ammo. MP's are great pistols and the S & W warranty is the best in the industry from my experience.
