I would even go so far as to tell the guy that you intend to leave it at home if that is his wish. You stand to gain exactly nothing by bucking up to him. That doesn't mean you can't still conceal it in your vehicle. He would never know.

A little diplomacy goes a long way.

The not saying anything works just fine until the corporation you work for hires a private security team with a K9 to search their parking lot. They will simply call you out to the lot one afternoon, tell you the dog alerted on your car and ask you to open your car and submit to a search. If you refuse they will escort you back to your desk and watch you pack. If your unlucky they take your badge then and demand you leave their property. They then box and mail you your personal property. Sorry guys. Just telling you how it will go down. If you like your job the safe bet is to leave your gun at home.

It all depends on how marketable you are. They CAN fire you.

Everyone knows I like to shoot at work. When we have training classes or other meetings and introduce ourselves and our hobbies I bring it up as my hobby, without being "in your face" about it. I've ended up making a number of new friends that way. I've taken a lot of people who never shot before to ranges as well (scary sometimes).

I like to be out in the open about it because I want to reinforce that it's not something to hide. It's normal. I'm laid back, and I have fun with it. There's a number of "semi-anti's" that have changed their tune after actually going to a range and HAVING FUN.

Of course, if I get fired I can make some phone calls and have a new job before the end of the day. If I was completely dependent upon my job I may act differently.

Kinda funny thing happened today. My boss is a CHL and an avid hunter. I know where he stands on this issue and it is favorable. I will, however, not discuss this issue with him. He has no need to know.

The funny thing is, my boss commented on my wearing my suit coat today. We were washing up in the restroom after a meeting. I was lax, leaving my coat at home because the 100+ temps lately. The boss asked why. I diverted the conversation. Like I said, none of his business.

Its not my intent to sound stupid, but reading the bill is confusing to me, so if some one would spell it for me that would be nice. Is it restricted to some one that holds a CHL? this is the only part of the bill that has me lost

I would wait a week or two, then drop a note to the HR head explaining that you feel a need for a clarification on the companies policy and that some management staff may be misinterpreting the state law when talking to employees. Highlight the offending parts in the laws description to make it easy for them to understand your issue. Depending on the size of the company, an anonymous letter might be enough. I would not mention your supervisor by name or department. If you don't see action if a week or two from then, maybe contact the person you wrote the letter to by phone. Big enough company and that person might not recognize your voice if you fear for your job. If you have a strong HR department that can and will handle this with professionalism, then use your name and expect follow up. While it might not be a typical whistle-blower type of thing, many companies are now treating all issues like this with extreme care.

Anonymous letter via external email is the safest if you're worried about your job.

OPSEC. Don't ask don't tell them you have a gun in the car. These folks aren't lawyers and saying no is easy.

The author claims he wrote it that way for a purpose, possibly to ease the bill through the legislative process, and I agree it could be more clearly worded. But it does apply to CHL holders or persons lawfully possessing firearms.

Am I reading that bill correctly to understand it only applies to chl holders?

Re: My boss says even with the new law for the parking lot right to have a firearm in

If your car isn't on a lot with controlled access, they need a warrant to search your car. I worked for a company that shared a parking lot with other companies, and after being hired, they came up with an employee manual that had a couple of anti-gun, and vehicle search clauses. I protested those two items, like so:

Our parking lot was shared, and there was no controll over access to it, meaning anybody could conceivably walk up and put something into or take something out of my car without my prior consent or knowledge. They could therefore not hold me liable for anything they found in the car. I further stated that with the wndows rolled up and the doors locked, I had a reasonable expectation of privacy, and without reasonable articulable suspicion, the could not compel me to alklow access to the vehicle without a warrant. I further stated that I expected full monetary recompense for damages incurred and property stolen from my car since they were so ready to claim they had a right to search my vehicle at will.

The clause was altered to include that they would produce a warrant and have law enforcement representatives conduct any such search.

The second clause I had a problem with was that I was prohibited from having a gun at any time while representing the company or conducting company business. I informed them that I owned firearms and often carried them in my car, and then reminded them that I occasionally worked - for the company - at home, and the clause in question would have the direct affect of infringing my 2nd amendment rights.

The clause was changed to simply say employees couldn't bring a weapon onto company or customer premesis. That was much more acceptable and reasonable to me.

I worked there for another 2 years before quitting to go somewhere else. To my knowledge, nobody that's ever worked there has had their car searched.

Caveat - Your experience will probably be different (if you chose to contest an employee manual clause).

the company i work for is nice enough to explain when you hire on that guns stay locked up in your private vehicle in the parking lot, guess i was lucky and got a descent one to work for. They wore also nice enough to explain how they felt about cc in their vehicles and building, not as friendly....they do try to say it is illegal, which i dont think it is being that they have no 30.06 signs anywhere, but i doubt they would give much time to pack your crap.

I've always kept a firearm in my vehicle, no one knew back when I could get fired for it, and no one knows now either.

In Texas you can be let go without cause. Unless there is some disciplinary reason for you dismissal, you will have the right to file for unemployment compensation. The exceptions are race, gender or religion. I've owned and operated my business for 20 years and have had some dismissed employees cry foul only to find they have no case.
Don't forget Civil Service employees, they have protection too.

I always love these excpetions people point to. I've referred DOZENS of wrongful termination cases to employment law attorneys, and only one ever took one of the cases(and it was so obvious no real investigation was needed). They are extremely difficult cases to prove and often result in the terminated employee being unable to find legal counsel, thus having no remedy.

After working as a Ops Manager for both small and large companies for many years now... I couldn't care less what the company manual or possition is on keeping a firearm in your car - MY Policy has always been - "What I don't know, I don't know." So when this came up - an employee asked me about it, while working for a company with an encyclopedia of rules and restrictions - that's what I told him... "Don't bring it into the building, and don't tell me when you have it with you..." He then proceeded to tell me he had a pistol in his truck anyway and I replied, "I didn't hear you and we never had this conversation...", Knowing I was in the process of getting my CHL, I just smiled when he asked if I kept my pistol in my truck.
    Discussion Over.
