I've never broken in a barrel and all of my ARs shoot moa or better. Same goes for my 2 bolt actions. I shoot anything I can get until accuracy declines, then clean. Repeat this process thought the life of the barrel. :)

Thanks for talks help everyone, when I get home from work Sunday I'm gonna go shoot my Colt for the first time. Really excited to get some rounds off!

AustinN4 so you are saying there is no proper or preferred way to break in a rifle?

When I first bought my Windham, I immediately took it to the range and fired 15 rounds for a functions check. No accuracy-just aimed the barrel in the direction of the berm and fired it off moderately for the first 5 and then as fast as I could for the final 10. Since then, I've never done any sort of barrel break in. I just shoot and clean after each range session. I use a wide range of brands of ammo, types of ammo, and weights of ammo(mainly 55 gr, but I still have a few lower and higher).

It is actually not necessary to break in an AR barrel but if you want to anyway break it in the way you plan to shoot it.

I use 1/7 on just about everything 5.56 with a few specific exceptions.

In my case and because of my specific use I use M855 to break them in.

Shoot three, clean, shoot 3 more.

Repeat until 30 rounds in ten sets of three have been shot.

Then shoot a full mag (30) and clean.

Do it again and I'm done.

And what do you feel you're achieving in doing so?

    I do similar.
Do I achieve longer barrel life? I cant say for certain.
Do I achieve greater accuracy? Probably not.
Do I see a difference when cleaning and removing copper fouling. Yes, I do.

Damn. I just go to the mad minute at Hicksville and fire as many rounds as possible without Grumper's full auto.

For a run of the mill barrel, just shoot ten iterations of ten rounds of ammo recommended by the manufacturer.

Squirt some bore cleaner down the bore, let it rest a few minutes, then run a brush and patches until the patches come out clean.

I know that get tedious at the rifle range. But ... the devil is in the details.

I bought 120 rounds of xm855 green tip, do y'all know if local ranges have any objection to using this ammo on their ranges? I read a little online and some said that their local ranges won't allow them to shoot xm855?

It's a Colt, go shoot the damn thing with whatever you can find. That's a battle rifle designed to shoot in the crappiest conditions imaginable. It's not a precision rifle and even if it was the barrel would already be lapped anyway.

    Great weapon by the way.

I bought a 100 rounds of .223 American eagle FMJ, can't wait to test mine, hopefully no issues.
