Yeah, it's a whole different world in Portland, far too many dingbat liberals for my taste, but then what do you expect from a place where their motto is "Keep Portland Weird" and they're proud of that.

What's sad is that I can remember a time back before they stole that slogan that both Portland and Austin were nice (or, at least fun) places.

I can barely remember a mid-1990s pub crawl on 6th in the wee hours with a teenage porn star, her publicist, and her makeup artist. I think I had fun, even at that late date. The memory is hazy. I do remember that only one bar stopped her to question her age and she just pointed at me and said "I'm with dad."

To my mind, a poignant addendum: Two years later, she introduced me to her fiance and basically asked permission to marry him. I had only spent a week and a few random days with the girl and she had been so neglected by the men in her life to that point that in such a short time she came to view me as a father figure. I was flattered and saddened at the same time.

I guess that's what happens to pretty girls who are born and raised in San Francisco.

10 seconds after I met her, I opened a door for her. She stopped and stared at me like I was insane for several seconds.

I honestly think it was the first time in her entire life that a man had held a door for her.
