It should either open upward or have a roller system like a banker's desk.

......and a few eye bolts on the posts.....for reasons.

It's not meant for quick access. It's real purpose is a hidden compartment. I do admire some of the ingenuity involved in the design, but also see some problems.

The lock and open system is a masterpiece of simplicity and ingenuity. A simple rabbit joint that fits into a dado in the lid. The lid overhangs. Lift the lid, push the front panel in place and let the lid down. Lift the lid and let the panel down to open.

The problem I see is having the panel and top butting up to the posts. Should be hidden joints away from them.

Mom tought us to sew. Pop to cook, he was better at it by far. But I took home economics in HS.

I failed home economics in junior high. I was even told I'd fail at parenting because a boy and I got into a fight and broke each other's egg babies. I tried to make a pillow, but the teacher ended up pulling me off the machine because my threading continued to clump up. I just wasn't good at being a girl back then.
