I remember my mom griping, early 60s I think, when premium gas went from 0.15 to 0.17/gallon. I recall gas wars where regular was 0.25/gallon in 1969.

Never heard of such a thing. In my squadron, when on security, we had to keep our bullets in our pants pocket like Barney Fife did. I figured that I could call 'time out' if a threat approached.
As far as when I was driving, I do remember filling up and getting change back for a $5 bill.Cheapest I ever remember paying for gas was 13.9cents/gal at the first self service in Irving. Walking to the corner grocery store and getting a Dr Pepper (10-12 oz btl) and a large Baby Ruth for a quarter. Milk was $1/gal.
Early 60's, USAF, stateside, M1 Carbine, 15 round mag in pocket. I only had to load and lock one time. That's when the OD showed up drunk at midnight. After the clicks he left.Never heard of such a thing.
We went with our M16s with a loaded 30 round mag and 3 more in reserve on our belt
We did not carry one in the chamber
