Went to Academy Sugar Land to buy some gym shorts, ended up buying 5 20 rd boxes of Olin M855 (5.56). It's 62 gr green tip penetrator. 20 rounds a box for $7.99

Anyone have any experience with Olin? I've never heard of them before, but it would be nice to try some 62 gr 5.56 in my 1:7 twist AR rather than keep using federal .223 value pack 55 gr.

Will this noticeably change my zero compared to the .223 55 gr? I know 62 gr should work better with my 1:7 than 55 gr.

They also had a bunch of boxes of 7.62x39 zombie max... overpriced novelty item...

olin is winchester. i would be concerned if these are real olin/win green tips. edit: the pictures look like they are real ones, theyre certainly treated the same, if you look at the case you will see the discoloration near the neck from it being treated.

Concerned about POI or is there something else to be worried about. Also to the OP, how was the price, I usually go with american eagle(cause I'm cheap) but wouldn't mind testing some heavier rounds and alittle extra length in my 1/9 twist

concerned that these may be fakes. winchester from what i recall, no longer is at the lake city factory and another contractor is producing them. so you would think old olin winchester surplus is gone by now. unless this is a lot someone had stashed. thats not to say even if they were fakes, they wouldnt perform as well. its just that lots of companies out there misrepresent lots of military ammo as surplus, contract overrun, etc, etc when its really not and those lots have been long sold. you mainly see these tactics at gunshows, and unfortunately sometimes online dealers.

    $8 for a 20 round box. I bought 100 rounds, about $40.

You can buy 5.56 m193 55 gr 100 rd value packs on CTD for $32 + tax and shipping, so after you factor those in, it's cheaper to get this ammo, and i'd rather take m855 over m193.

i meant the Wally World 55g .223 that AE puts out. Hardly ever run real 5.56, still only a couple bucks more, may have my wife swing by the academy in waco and see if they have any.

i wouldnt hesitate. 62gr normally goes for 6.99 to 9.99 but mostly closer to 6.99 a box. its all i run.

How could I tell if they're fake or not? What should I look for?

should look similar to the pic of mine i posted. theyre treated at the necks, crimped and sealed bullets. beyond that you would need a chronograph. yours looks legit though. kind of a dark pic but i can make out the signs.

No problem! They had about... 15 20 boxes from what I recall. Hopefully the Waco location has some as well!

How will the change of POI vary between 55 gr .223 and the 62 gr 5.56 through a 1:7 twist barrel? Suppose at 50 to 100 yards?

That looks to be the real deal.

    11 headstamp, made last year.
Nato Stamp- Built to that spec.
    WCC Stamp-Western Cartridge Company (Winchester)

I bet that is real good stuff, not imitation.

how was your 55gr shooting before? 62gr shoots pretty flat for me. 55gr not so much.

I'm not quite the marksman. Last time I went to ASC, at 50 yards I was getting 2 inch groups with irons. I'm pretty sure that's shit at that range, but I don't go to the range often so I don't have enough practice and rounds under my belt.

Here are some better pics. It is crimped at the front, and it is also discolored like it should be.

Lots of redundant pictures coming up! beware!
