In any case identify the small end and put that down on your block.

While heat *could* help eventually, I'd tap the pins from both sides and see if there's any movement first, trying the left to right approach first, since it seems smith pins are driven right to left. I wouldn't get too excited with heat, just because I wouldn't want to get too much on there and risk damaging the barrel. The pins shouldn't be installed with any sort of bonding agent, but it possible there is some corrosion. Give it a shot of penetrating oil before you go with heat.

I did the same swap you're doing now on an AR - I prefer a free floated rail vs the bulky plastic handguards.

I want to changed the gas block because it currently has the two piece hand guards on it. Would like to add a rail were I can attach a front grip etc.

I would recommend a drop in handguard of some type, quad rails are good if you want pic rails, and there are a few polymer keymod/mlok handguards.

Messing with the operating system is a stop of last resort
