    During his 63 combat missions flying F9F Panthers with VMF-311 "Tomcats" in the Korean War, USMC pilot John Glenn earned the nickname "Old Magnet Ass" for the sheer amount of flak damage he flew home with after a couple of notable missions, including one where an anti-aircraft shell blew a hole in his vertical stabilizer a man could almost crawl through, and another where a napalm bomb on his wing was hit and detonated, engulfing the wing with fire before Glenn nursed the aircraft home. Glenn was unscathed, but the Panther was a write-off and had to be scrapped.

    Later in the war he served an exchange tour with the USAF, flying F-86 Sabres in combat over MiG Alley. His aggressiveness earned him the nickname "MiG Mad Marine", which was emblazoned on the side of his Sabre. He would shoot down three MiG-15s during his 27 combat missions in the Sabre.

    Glenn would later become a test pilot and set a cross-country speed record in the F-8 Crusader for "Project Bullet". His average speed from California to New York was 725.55 mph, refuelling 3 times from tanker aircraft over the 3hr 23min flight which was mostly flown in full afterburner. Along with being a PR operation, it was also a test of the Crusader's engine under extreme use. After the flight Pratt and Whitney tore down the engine from Glenn's aircraft, inspected it, and based on its condition removed all afterburner use restrictions for the F-8 Crusader fleet flown by the USMC and the Navy.

    The Project Bullet flight was a factor in Glenn being selected for Project Mercury and his later achievements as an astronaut.
