If your dentist is that horrifying, I can recommend a great one in Helotes!

After 25 years of dental hobby shops in the USAF, I was relieved to find an excellent dentist once I retired. Thanks to my addiction to sweet tea, I am a regular customer. I just had a root canal done just before Christmas, and it took just over an hour with practically no pain. I've had military dentists do a simple filling that required bed rest for several days afterward! But now it's gotten to the point that I actually look forward to going!

My first root canal took three days and was pretty painful, and it was done by the dental clinic commander (an Army full bird colonel). I was shocked at how less torturous it was with a civilian dentist. There is nothing more comforting than having an excellent dentist, and we've gotten to be such good friends with ours that he's told us to call him at home or stop by the house if we ever have problems after hours!

    Cheers! M2

    dental hobby shops - LoL

If the needle is your biggest fear at the dentist, you need a new dentist. With proper technique you shouldn't feel it OR even know you're fixing to get the stick.

'cept fer Skip. Use the 5 gauge on him :-D

Saw a patient last year for a toothache. He had not been in for 8 years. 30 year smoker. The toothache turned out to be cancer under the tongue. Died two months later. Those cancers can be cured if caught earlier. Regular checkups can catch them early.

Dental insurance companies suck. It is a scam. You give them your money and they will lie, cheat, and steal to keep at least 30%. They do not care about the patients health. Its all about money. I spend at least 3 hours a day just fighting for what they should be paying for anyway. In a sense they are in the perfect situation. All the money goes to them first and they have the checkbook. If they hold off on paying thousands of doctors a couple months and ho invest that money, they make millions on the interest. They keep the profits then pay out some of what they owe.

My current dentist is a good guy and gets things done with a minimal amount of agony. The dentist I went to as a kid must have been a sadist - I HATED going to that guy, and kept telling my folks that, but no dice.

I went to one like that when I was 13. Supposedly a "children's dentist," the guy was incompetent. Selwyn P. Burridge. I'll never forget his name. He didn't deaden the nerve in the tooth, he deadened the entire side of my face instead and every time he hit the nerve while drilling, I'd jump and he'd yell at me to stop moving around. Later on (at age 21), that filling fell out and the dentist I went to for the repair said the previous dentist (Burridge) didn't underdrill and that's why the filling fell out.

    I'm the same way,

I had one tooth that was killing me a year ago, so i finally caved and went to a popular dentist in town who advertises all the time about helping with dental phobia and using sedation dentistry. Well after 45 minutes of looking and Xrays it is determined that I need 6K+ dollars in work, I nearly had a heart attack. So I asked them to pull the hurting tooth and I would return to have the rest of the work done when I was able to free up some cash. They doped me up pulled the tooth and kicked me out, I didn't even remember paying, I woke in my car 45 mins later in their parking lot. I then called my friend to come get me as I was still wasn't comfortable to drive. 2 days go by and my mouth is killing me, surprise surprise it go dry socket, which is the most painful thing I have felt. I went 2 full weeks without a Energy drink or caffeine of any kind and anybody who knows me should know I was less than plesant to deal with. All in all i felt miserable and the sad thing is I wanred them ahead of time of how nervous I was but all they seemed to care about was their money

I had an excellent dentist in GA. When I had to get some fillings done, they missed with the novacain and had to do an extra shot (receiving needles as long as I can't see it does not bother me one bit... however, seeing a catheter in my arm, even if the needle is flexible, will make me not move it). It kinda saddened me to hear that he had gone to the hospital for falling and breaking his hip, then finding out that he had bone cancer. They ended up getting a younger dentist, but that was the last time that I saw them.

I'm really trying to push me and my husband to lead healthier lives not just for ourselves, but our daughter, and trying to get him to go get some of his teeth removed because of his party days, but you know... lolobamacare. Compared to his teeth, mine look great, but I need some fillings, and probably a root canal or two. Might as well get the root canal teeth pulled.
