As a retired teacher and administrator I feel I must comment. If a parent or citizen is fed up with the teachers, you're looking in the wrong direction for change. The state determines the curriculum, the citizens elect the school board, the administration follows their requests and directs the teachers what to teach (based on what the state has mandated) and ......... how to teach it. A theory about the teachers being responsible for all things wrong with education is totally wrong. It would be like blaming the carpenters helper for a structure being built poorly! Yes, there are some teachers that should try some other occupation. The teachers are at the bottom of the ladder. They must teach the curriculum that is mandated by the state.
    Honest questions then.

    - Who decides if kids in a classroom show enthusiasm with quiet wavy hands, as in this video (and no, I'm not kidding, I saw this with my own two eyes in Cy-Fair ISD): Dem Socialists Convention
    - Who decides when my kids finish their work and ask for something a little more challenging, that it's not available?
    - When my 1st grader comes home talking about learning about Joe Biden in school, where does that fall in the curriculum?
    - When my oldest (now graduated and off to the Air Force) was questioned about taking a socially conservative position in one of his classes and 'encouraged' to revise his paper before being graded, who makes that call?

The majority of the teachers I knew did there job well. If the teacher is incompetent, they should be dealt with accordingly.

    Did thay? (sorry! lol)

The teacher should make more challenging work available when applicable but that can't always happen. I respected the teachers I supervised but the bottom line is ......... when they close that classroom door, it them and the students. I agree that some of the teachers should not have chosen to be a teacher. Just like any other profession. From what I saw in my teaching career, the majority of the staff did a pretty good job. But there are some that chose the wrong profession and need to look elsewhere.
Edit to add: I was an administrator in two small districts. Large districts have many more problems than small districts, IMO.

We were flat out told they could not give him anything beyond grade level work. He gets 100's on basically everything, which might seem great but I don't want him growing up thinking everything will be that easy either.

To answer your questions on decisions made, ultimately it's the teachers initially, and if it continues to be an issue it should be brought to the teacher's supervisor (principal, asst. principal, etc.). Being a teacher these days is not necessarily an easy job, especially in large districts. My last few years before I retired were in relative small districts and things worked pretty well. I can't even imagine the politics of working in a district like Houston, Dallas, Austin, etc.

Glad I became an engineer looking at that pay scale lol makes my job worth waking up for in the morning.

Also considering what kids are like today, I think they might need a pay bump
One line that has stuck in my mind over the years came from one of my favorite teachers. First day of class he says something to the effect of 'There is nothing I can do that can make you learn, so if you're not intending to try all I can ask is that you sit quietly so the rest of the kids can.'

As an educator myself I agree with everything you said. Parents want to blame everything on teachers.

I didn't even realize they had a teacher discount going today. I went by there earlier and bought 200 rounds of 9mm ammo. Their website doesn't say anything about firearms or ammunition being excluded. I might have to go back.

When a building falls is not the carpenters work assessed? Are not the workers asked to explain?
Teachers knowingly teach only parts of history that fit their unions narrative. Should they not be questioned? An otherwise capable kid can't make change for a dollar. or doesn't know if the digital balance on his phone is correct. Should we not question the teacher? Should we not put the bad ones out of work?

As to low wages. When I got old Social Security sent me a list of all the money I ever made. I read it over and thought. Holy Cow, why the hell was I a cop? I never made very much at it.
But I did know I did what I was supposed to do. What my heart told me I should do. In the back of my head I knew I'd never really retire as a bit more would always be needed.
I think a lot of teachers felt like me
But I never sold out the law like teachers sold out our kids futures.

A lot of the stupid shit that goes on in the schools is pushed by the administrators and political types. My sister in law is a teacher, and you’d be surprised at just how little control they have over the curriculum. They are teaching kids to pass a test. Thats it. A teachers report card is reflective on how well her students do on the test. Coworker has 3 kids, one is a teen and the other two are preteen. Cursive and Roman numerals are no longer in the curriculum. It would be interesting to see how they sign their names when the time comes.

This is pretty much dead on. We basically spend 90% of the time preparing them for the STAAR tests. Schools and districts are graded on how well the kids do on those standardized tests.

But are teachers to blame? Nope.

So should Academy end discounts for Military and first responders so that any bad apples in those groups aren't rewarded either?

    That place east of Waco....
    1. Texas doesn't have teachers' unions like other states. At best, they are professional support organizations that have zero bargaining power and almost zero lobbying influence. Municipal workers unions have more clout.

    2. If you don't like what teachers teach, hold the school boards and Legislature accountable. They're the ones forcing this on educators. And you guys keep voting them back in just because they're in a certain political party.....even when they don't keep their promises or their platform.

    3. Ever play that game where you yell a random name out and see who responds? I think I did that in my last post.....

I would like to thank Academy Sports for not including retired teachers in their teachers promotion.
Between the Demoncraps turning their backs on us and Academy we now know how much our service
    was appreciated.

So should Academy end discounts for Military and first responders so that any bad apples in those groups aren't rewarded either?

Lets break it down by your first post.

I think you are upset because Academy doesn't include retired teachers as condition of being eligible tor a discount.

Even if voted for Democrats, they are going to turn their back on you. Democrats are back-stabbing politicians that only pander for votes, and have zero intentions of delivering anything they promise.

    Suck it up cupcake.

Academy can set the conditions one must meet to be eligible to get a discount. Their store, their rules. Open your own store, and you get the set those conditions. With a store like Academy, I'll bet it was a corporate committee that decided who was included, and who was excluded on getting the discount.

My impression of your post opening the thread, you came off as whining because you didn't get a discount because you are retired from that profession. In my minds view of your post, the profession was irrelevant.

I'm a retired mechanic. I don't get any discounts. I didn't get any discounts being a mechanic when I was still doing the job either. Maybe I should start a thread complaining about that?
