My thoughts too. Hoping someone can notice some little detail that will differentiate.

Those were the same J M Browning design, just made by different companies at different times: F.N. Belgium, Remington Arms, Daiwa, etc.

IIRC, the many variants were not mechanically different.

Older models may have a ‘’safety’’ in the front of the trigger guard and some were chambered for 2-9/16’’ shotshells, instead of the modern 2-3/4’’ & 3’’ shells.

Also, early FN’s may have ‘’matted’’ (solid or non-ventillated) ribs. It is a classic. The Belgian’s I’ve seen were all marked “F N”, for “Fabrique National”.

One warning: when well-worn, an Auto-5 is liable to fire safety-on, no trigger pressure, if held horizontally and rotated 1/4 turn clockwise. l almost learned this the extremely hard way back around 1959.

Have a good Smith check yours out.

When my grandad died in 2011 the guns went to various family members. One of my uncles decided he wanted to pass this on to me.

I still want the 1911, but I don’t see that happening unfortunately.

My dad said he will try taking more later.

He said it belonged to my great grandfather (who died in early 80, a few days after I was born) who gave it to my grandfather. It sat in a rack (that I have now) on the wall in the family room in their house from as early as I can remember until his death in 2011.
