Just like the thread title, why would anyone not seeking a collectors firearm, but a used garden variety EDC for the price of a new one or close to the price of a new one?

    I'm puzzled.

Why would I pay new or almost new cost for a used gun, that I've no idea how it's been maintained (or not) or even operates well?

    I don't get it.

Yes, if I'm selling and someone is willing to pay what I want, ok, but I'm wondering who does that?

Who pays new or almost new for old?

Please, advise....anyone know....this is a mystery to me and I see all the time.

I've seen it more often than not people trying to sell them for new or more than new. I don't get it either. Maybe criminals who don't want to go through a background check? but even then most people required a LTC nowadays.

There is a theory that fits what you are saying. Criminals will pay higher prices to avoid background checks. I don't necessarily buy into it but I am sure it does happen.

My biggest theory why people overprice their guns is ignorance. They paid too much and don't know there are better prices out there.

You bought your AR during the Obama gun scare? Sorry, you aren't touching that price now.

Last but not least, buy low and sell high and price your stuff with room to negotiate. With the lower priced guns that puts your price close to new prices.

    Oh, I see.

Hadn't remotely thought of the criminal angle.

Plus, I laugh like hell when I see the equivalent of yes, it's a used car, but it's only driven on Sunday by Grandma i.e., very low round count - in like new condition...snort!

    Gunz are icky.
Just pass on it if the price seems stupid.
When their lowest price is within 20% of a new piece I just buy new.
People are trying to maximize their profit.

PT Barnum (some dispute he originated this reflection) said: "There's a sucker born every minute".

He (or someone else) is right on the money.

Then there's the guy who sincerely wants to recoup exactly or more, what he put into (by way of add-ons) his one time presumably favorite firearm.

Fine, if he can get that, but I won't pay for a used firearm costing well over a new stock equivalent due to an abundance of accessories.

So, the seller installed a new trigger that cost a bundle and a new this, that and the other. It cost him a lot and he wants the buyer to pay what he paid or more...

No, I laugh at this sellers absurdity.

It aint new......and I won't pay what he paid.

Generally, I agree. However, I can see exceptions. I have one pistol I bought for $700. One of the gripes about that pistol is the expensive magazines to feed it, so I spent $700 more on magazines.

It's a $700 pistol but I wouldn't take less than $1000 for it because I would include all those magazines.

Most accessories don't add value but I happen to believe that extra magazines do.

    Reasonable viewpoint or not?

People need to learn that, when selling, the money is made on the buy...what you paid for the damned thing.

Charging too much for it to recoup your poor purchase decision (overpaying) doesn’t work for guns, or anything else.

It seems more prevalent lately with retail prices down a pretty good chunk versus a few years back. See it on TGT all the time. Some of it is just ignorance from relative newbies or uneducated sellers regarding current trends and pricing. Some of it is buyers who either can't buy legally or who can but don't want the paper trail......the latter sometimes liking the fact that there is no record of ownership if and when they come a knocking (or kicking) on the door someday.

Then of course there's no tax/shipping/FFL fees that sometimes is enough of a difference if it's a confirmed "near new" or otherwise in great shape firearm. Whatever combination of those three can be anywhere from say $40 to $80 for a $500 gun depending on what the purchase would be subject to.

Would I buy a gun from a buddy or coworker that I know that he just bought but doesn't care for for close to lowest current retail to save the extra $50 or so in taxes, etc.? Probably. But I wouldn't drive across town to meet a stranger to do the same thing.

A good reason to buy used these days is so there is no 4473 to tattle on you when the jack booted thug socialist send the Man around for your weapons. Having guns is determined to be a mental defect thus subject to confiscation in a fundamentally changed America.

More than the criminal angle( studies show the vast majority of guns in possession of criminals when they are arrested are stolen ) is there are people who want to own guns without their names attached to them.

They used to be called tinfoil hatters, but now are looked at with a different eye given how much .gov spying on the populace and tracking take place.

Reasonable..... as a semi-auto pistol is only a terrible single shot pistol without the magazine.

What firearms there was this terrible boating accident that happened to me?

If it is new, never fired and a gun I really wanted, I would pay at most 75% of the new price. Picked up some good unfired stuff for 75% or less. Just watched for opportunities as they came along.

As someone said above, if I would pay more than that I would just buy new from a dealer.

I think it's pretty rare that guns get shot enough to wear them out unless it's a milsurp. I usually just wait for a fair deal, certainly not retail, on something i want. My EDC is used, I paid about 80% of street price - no tax, no for fee, no shipping and I got a holster. Seems like a fair deal to me.
