Heres a youtube video about it comparing it to a older PSL rifle

Thanks for looking I have been wanting a semi auto 7.62x54R rifle because of the price of bulk ammo and it is quite powerful. I have read its comparable to the mighty .308 if not slightly more powerful.

Thanks for posting. I've been looking at similar guns in 7.62x54R and 7.62x51 (.308). Would like to hear what you think of it after putting some rounds down range. Watch out for the cheap tins of 54R. Some of them have corrosive primer.

I've heard 7.62x54R is comparable to .30-06. I love shooting my 91/30, so I'm sure this one will be a blast. What brand of ammo is that? It looks like the box says hunting ammo, but it sure looks like FMJ to me.

I have the VEPR-K and they are awsome rifles. The K takes AK mags but other than that, they are great shooters. The only complaint about a VEPR is that they way a ton. RPK recievers and chrome lined barrels makes them the most accurate AK's made.

I actually wanted more weight to absorb most of the recoil for comfort. This rifle will be fired from a rest or a shot bag mainly for longer range targets.

Hey goofycracker. I just ordered my vepr54r/23" from a*m yesterday. Stupid me , i ordered in the middle of the week so i'll have to wait till proabbly tues or wed for delivery. Question (1). I was wondering if the 8x large bell housing on your scope cleared the front sight ok. Looks real close, if not just touching it a little bit. (2) Where did you buy it? Kalink* or somewhere else? (3). With that 8x power scope is 25 to 50 yards shots possible?

Bought my VEPR K from Robarms back '04, its without a doubt the nicest AK I have ever seen. I may have to pick up another one, now that they are back around. Can't beat that RPK receiver.

I bought the POSP from Kalinka yes it clears the front site...

I sighted in mine to start at 25yds with 4x power I need to head to the range to get some 100+ yard shots sighted in

Thanks for the quick reply. I just noticed it is a variable zoom you have. I posted before i drank my coffee. I really bought that gun for one purpose......shoot surplus ammo. I'm unable to afford ammo these days and with 440 rounds going for 85.00 bucks at the gun shows, looks like I'll be back at the range more often. All of my buddies say i wasted my money on that foreign junk and that "corrosive ammo" is bad news. Well we'll see who has the last laugh. According to my math, the 54rVEPR will pay for itself in short order

Sweet. How much do You have in to it? I really like the posp. I have had one for years, with the german chevron, and love it. You will probably toss the eyepiece like I did. I have never used the illum, but the glass is super high quality. It will be a great scope for hogs. I have never shot hogs with mine, but that was the intent when I got the posp from Kalinka. The corrosive ammo argument is bs. I have been shooting mosins and ak74s for years and have only rusted out 1 91/30, and that was by negligence on my part. The VEPR has a chrome lined chamber and bore. It will be easy to maintain just be cleaning it. I have an ar15 chambered in 5.45x39, that just hit 10,000 round count. Every last round was Russian 7n6, with corrosive primers. There is zero signs of corrosion. I would love to get into a VEPR, depending on the cost.

Well, I apparently bought the last 23 inch for 899.00 free ship @ aim surplus. I just went to their website and the 23" is sold out. Looks like they still have the 20" for 899.95 free ship. Why the 20 inch is .95 cents more, i have no idea. Maybe just a typo. I'm new to this forum so i don't know if I'm allowed to post links but only a few suppliers have them in stock. Center fire systems, Aim surplus, J&G, Classic firearms and Atlantic firearms all them within 20.00 or so. I watched for the free shipping on all of those sites and they seem to alternate free shipping deals. A friend of mine w/FFL did the paper for 20.00 bucks. So total so far, I have 919.00 in it, without any POSP yet. If anybody has suggestions for some different optics, I'm all ears.

WAY nicer than a PSL. No comparison, and about the same price.
Say what?? More like $250 more than a PSL
Worth it tho, I'm sure. I like how it's more like an RPK than it is an AK. Is the barrel threaded? It looks like it has a thread protector screwed onto the end.

PSL's are going for around $700 and you can get a VEPR for the about the same. The days of $450 PSLs are gone.

    =edit=

AIM looks like the have one for $550, but they are sold out. No more at centerfire either. Eitherway the VEPR is in a whole different league.
