It’s irritating that my trim level doesn’t have a power lock back there.
Which trim?

I feel the sudden need to start locking my tailgate. I didn't realize tailgate theft was a thing.

It's been a thing for a long time. Definitely keep it locked and add a hose clamp if nothing else.I feel the sudden need to start locking my tailgate. I didn't realize tailgate theft was a thing.

There's a reason most of the new ones have the auto-locking tailgate as standard equipment now.I feel the sudden need to start locking my tailgate. I didn't realize tailgate theft was a thing.

Which trim?
Mine is a Silverado LT Z71
My current and previous LT Z71's had the locking tailgate. Even my work issued 17 WT 2500 had a locking tailgate. and both Avalanches too. I think it started becoming standard with the back up camera.Mine is a Silverado LT Z71

Which one did you install, and how tough was it to do?

Mine is a 2015, maybe that has something to do with it.
It does have a camera, not sure if that was standard or optional though
It was standard on the Avalanches since 09 I know of, and i guess it could have been an add on for my 13 Silverado.Pretty certain remote lock tailgate was not available on any of the Chevy 1500-series trims in 2015. I *think* it was a GMC Sierra or HD only option.

Battery is fully charged, but it does seem more sluggish than normal in cranking. Might be a good idea to check the voltage drop while cranking; could be going below the threshold voltage of the ECU like you suggest. Would need to still figure out what's causing the extra drain. He should try charging the battery first. ECU won't fire the injectors if voltage drops too low.
