I don't remember 5¢, but I remember 6¢ at the gas station. That must have been circa 1959.
The five-cent machines were on Ft. Jackson in the mid-late '60s.

I remember the first 20-cent machine I ever saw was outside "South of the Border" on the North Carolina/South Carolina line. I actually walked up to that machine with only a dime! I couldn't even imagine a bottle drink could cost any more than that!!!

Everyone that said something other than Dr. Pepper needs to get the banhammer. This is a TEXAS forum, not yankee-land.
You make it sound like DP is a yankee thing. It originated up north - according to Austinites, but it came from down south according to Dallasites.

When I used to drink soda, Dr. Pepper. Soda is for kids, its loaded with sugar and is terrible for you. I kicked the habit long ago. My wife insisted I try one of the sodas from the fountain area at the local BBQ area in Belton, one sip and I almost gagged, all this time without something that extreme in sugar makes me hate the stuff.

I gave up cigarettes for $400 a month I can spend on other habits. Like Dr Pepper.

I don't drink pop very often, usually root beer and where I got it probably doesn't give you a choice on root beer. Now as far as cola goes, I can care less, but if there is a choice I would pick Pepsi over Coke ..... screw ya.

Gotta admit, when I first came to Texas in 1992, folks corrected me that all carbonated soda drinks were called "Coke." After the initial "You wanna a Coke?" was offered, the reply may specify Dr Pepper or 7 Up.

When I moved up to Ohio in 2000, I had a helluva time at restaurants:

Me: "What kinda cokes y'all got?"
Waitress: (looking at me funny) "We have Diet and Regular"
Me: "Y'all don't have any Dr. Pepper?"
Waitress: "Oh course we do, but you asked what kind of Coke we have"
Me: "Nevermind, I'll just have a tea"
Waitress: "You want sugar and milk with that?"
    Me: "Huh?"
Waitress: "Oh! You meant iced tea!"
Me: (sobbing silently to myself while humming "I wanna go home with the armadillo...")

Thank God I've been home since 2010!
