What kind of snake is this??

    First snake at the house out in Hondo, any idea what kind this guy is? Sorry for the poor quality cell phone pic.

    Looks like a Rat Snake but need better pics of head. Google Rat Snake and compare. If dead, open mouth and see if it is Cottonmouth.

    It does not appear to be a Coral, Rattle, or Copperhead, which are the other most common venomous snakes in Texas.

    Did it have a musky smell?? The pattern makes me think cottonmouth.

    Head looks too small for a cottonmouth, almost sure a ratsnake.

    Round eyes - nonvenomous
    Slant eyes - venomous



    With that said ... looks like the new boot/belt kind to me ...

    I've always gone by the head.


    Has a head....kill it.


    No head.....shoot it one more time just to be sure.
