Just trying to get you guys to help me think outside the box.
A fish hook is pretty much just that. But one with a small enough eye and you can kind of sew with one. Maybe dry clothes or suspend things. Sure there are better tools but it's a question o what you got and what can you do with it?
So what's the one item in your pack that has the most uses?

    good answers here.
aside form your mind and natural tools, here is another vote for a knife.
indispensable tool. probably why it was one of the first ones invented.

also depends on how you view a "tool". i would have to say that fire is probably the best tool in a survival situation. so, being able to start that fire is incredibly important. without water and subsequently fire to boil the water to make it safe to drink, you are dead pretty quick. i would put a knife a close second to fire.

Gerber has a survival knife out not with a fire starter and knife sharpener in the sheath, but i would probably say knife of some kind, you can make fire with out other tools(may take some work), your can do alot with a knife, like make other tools.

Good hiking boots. Ever hike 30 miles in tennis shoes? Well I have, they blew out at about 20 miles. Try surviving in one place.

Number one is education. After that, the tool of most importance changes with the environment. The Artic, desert and ocean all make a knife less valuable than another item. Yet in any environment I know I would include a knife.

High on the list for me would be a small pack, prepared before hand for the environment to be encountered. Again, it comes back to education. knowing what the possible dangers are and being educated and aware enough to carry the items to make this voyage survivable.

A knife is good for doing a ton of stuff. Proper clothing is important, too. But there are some ways around that, depending on the situation...
