The potential for a negligent discharge when "pistol whipping" is very high. If you are using a deadly weapon in a non deadly way, you apparently do not have justification to use deadly force. If you discharge a round and hit someone, anyone, you are screwed.
The only time I would strike someone with a handgun is if I needed to kill them but I am out of ammo.
