Why is the 14.5 barrel commonly offered with a welded FS? With the extra length, it's still 16. So why get it? Whats the point?

Why is the 300blk offered in the 10-11" barrel range? Besides a compact rifle, doesn't it lose alot of velocity?

Everything that needs to be accomplished in the barrel with a .300Blk round is done in the first 11 to 12 inches.

The welded FS on a 14.5 barrel is there only to make up the difference between 14.5 and 16 inches to make it legal. I don't know why anyone would go this route over a 16 inch barrel but the welding of the FS as opposed to screwed on or even pinned leaves no doubt as to legality.

The most common short length barrels for 300Blk are 10 to 12 inches leaving room for a suppressor.

The oroginal design length of the 300 Blackout form AAC is a 9" barrel. I would submit that everything gets done in the 1st 9". But who is counting . . .lol

14.5 + flash hider is still shorter than 16 + flash hider. So if you go with a 14.5 bbl and a welded flash hider that as short as you can get legally.

Yeah, but to just have the bare min of barrel and have it welded....seems like a waste. Were talking 1.5 inches. It's not like thats gonna help anything.

Not to get off topic too far but this thread reminds me of the LOLs I get when I see the 11.5" 5.56 barrels with the 5.5" welded flash hider that Model 1 Sales drags to all of the shows here in north Texas:

Well the 11.5" barrel + fake pinned/welded moderator is what you need to have if you are building a retro Vietnam-era XM177 clone unless you feel like plopping down $400 in NFA transfer taxes.

Get you one of those retro Nodak Spud receivers, M16 parts kit, and one of those uppers with the fake moderator and you're set.

Umm the top and bottom flash hider pictures are pretty hideous.

Those remind me of Tab cola. All the fiss, but no flavor.

"Look everybody!!!! I have a 11" barrel!", "Kind of"..... "Am I still a badass?" "Guys?....hello? You there?", "Its 11"........"

The 14.5 pinned is about an inche shorter than the 16 with normal flash hider. Some poeple like the "heft" of it, some just like having a short a gun as possible without messing with NFA.

Its important enough to some people to put up with having a pinned muzzle device. Its not worth it to others. The question is. Is it important enough to you?

Forget a short barrel. 16" ups the muzzle energy. By 200#

The short barrel helps you get subsonic velocities. If you don't care about that and plan to shoot supersonic most of the time, I would ditch the 300 BLK and go with 6.8 with a 30 cal can. That will double the power. Do a 6.8 with a YHM 762 titanium phantom and a THOR thermal sight for the ultimate protection from the world bacon shortage.

Oh and skip the hassle of getting a stamp and go with a 16" mid-length upper. If subsonic is not the primary reason you are looking at 300 BLK, there's just no point to it. 6.8 will kick it's ass around the block all day long with a supersonic crack.

You know I did give the 6.8 some thought. It's a really good round. However, 300blk is running $12 for 20. (cheap remmy). I don't need another bolt. Same mag. Etc.

Iam not using a surpressor. So it's supersonic. Barrel 16".

This debate could have began with "I'm using 6.8". And the "use a 308 instead" would pop up. The 300blk is easy to convert. Has good performance out to 200yrds. For the hunting I plan to do, any round that performs below 150yards is perfect. For the distance, 300blk is damn near perfect.

For any round on the market. There's always another round that out performs it. As long as the round is NOT less then what you need. There's no reason to use a more powerful round.
