Our marriage laws are mostly holdovers that we inherited from English common law. The law's original intent was to uphold the "contract" of marriage. The progressives and socialists are the ones that wanted to use marriage laws to produce good citizens and increase the tax base. It's only become a moral issue in very recent times.If only government had never gotten into the business of marriage in the first place. /sigh
It would be good if government just got out of marriage regulation all together. People could go full contract with it if they wanted or just jump a broom. It's really not anyone's business other than the people wanting to be married.
