I like this thread better without the personal insults. Let's stick to the data.

Why is it a personal insult to state someones position? It is a statement of fact based on the data.

There is a difference between saying "youre a scummy globalist because..." while restating their position using their own words and just saying something insulting.

You're a scummy globalist willing to let people die because they believed the USA when our nation gave them our word and a fool to not be willing to say russia is wrong to have invaded a free and independent Ukraine.

Its scummier than driving an hour or two to meet someone who said they want to buy a gun then they low-ball you when you get there.

What's sad is BigRed doesn't realize your attitude of "that's life with politics" is why his booty gets plundered with such regularity, not because of the occasional and rare support for a independent sovereign nation that was invaded and has its people indiscriminately killed daily.

Wanting to put America’s tax dollars to work in America instead of around the world is literally the opposite of globalism. If a president makes a commitment 2 years into a 4 year term, that commitment is good for 2 years. Not indefinitely. I never said I agreed with Russias decision to invade Ukraine, only that seeing it from the Russian perspective is different from the US perspective, and we are having this discussion in a country that would react similarly.

I agree but...
Let's stick to the data.
...that admonition is pretty much limited to the other, "hard news" thread.

All political threads, if they stick around long enough, will contain some political posturing couched in terms designed to insult. All of us here have skins thick enough for that.

But if this thread devolves to a situation running afoul of the "if you just want to insult people..." rule...well...more administrative action may be required.

Has anyone mentioned what would happen to Russia if they lost? Would they be so weak and vulnerable that someone like China attacks them? Do they just accept defeat and rebuild for the next war?

“20 Days in Mariupol” received an Oscar for Best Feature Documentary. This is the first Ukrainian film to win an Oscar.

The film, directed by Mstislav Chernov, tells the story of the first weeks of fighting in Mariupol, Donetsk region, during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

"I am thankful. But I'll probably be the first director on this stage who wishes he hadn't made this film. I would like to be able to trade this for Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities; so that the Russians do not kill tens of thousands of my fellow citizens of Ukraine. I would give it if they released all the hostages, the soldiers who defended our land, the civilians who are in their prisons. But I can’t change history, I can’t change the past, we’re all against it together, you and I, we are now among the most talented people in the world. We can make sure that the truth wins,” Chernov said from the Oscars stage.

Ukraine, while intense, is mainly a regional conflict.

If Russia were to lose, it would have the same effect as when it lost in Afghanistan.

I doubt China or the US would use that opportunity to attack.

Russia is still a nuclear power.

Russia views this as a war for their national survival against an expanding NATO coalition that is committed to the destruction of Russian power, independence, and ultimately the installation of a new Russian government acceptable to western governments and corporations. If Russia is faced with the prospect of losing said war due to NATO working with Ukraine, Russia will employ tactical nukes (as would the US in a comparable situation; see the Cuban Missile Crisis). Will NATO then respond in kind? What comes after that? People talk about WW2 but I believe the better analogy is WW1, where no one really wanted a broad war but each completely logical decision by all parties led to one.

So is China....and it's a lot easier and more lucrative for China to head north over land than east over water....

China has a big chip on their shoulder over past humiliations by western powers & russia. russia took a lot of territory from them, they want it back.

They aren't going to attack russia, don't need to. They will just slowly stick it in russia's ass, and not a damn thing the rooskies can do about it; putler's mistake of invading Ukraine is draining them to the point they will end up vassals to China.

The question is what will happen should russia succeed in toppling a legitimate, sovereign government and now Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania become the legitimate, sovereign nations russia demands be a neutral buffer to NATO...

what’s in it for China to attack Russia?

Resources in the north, expanded ports, a jobs program for the unmarried military-aged males they have in abundance, and no condemnation from the world stage like they would for invading Taiwan....

...read THE BEAR AND THE DRAGON by Tom Clancy.

Not familiar with the book or how close it resembles situations in either country. That sounds like a lot of work for what they would gain though.
