I have a 3" that will keep up with the 5 and there are several here that have seen it. Nothing like throwing it in my back pocket when exiting the car.

Chuck, what condition is it in when it's in your back pocket? Holster or none? Just curious....

glad someone else carries "mezk'n" from time to time.. i've got a lot, and way to much money tied up in nice holsters.. and honestly there are some pistols that carry real well in a rear pocket.. it just works..

Educate me: 3 inch guns don't cycle? do I need to be worried about that?

Because of the 1911 design, there is a LOT involved in the overall cycle and function of the gun. From feeding to extracting, to feeding a new round. A lot of things have to align just right for the gun to function properly. With the shorter 1911 configurations (4-4.25" Commander size or 3-3.5" Officer's size), this window of operation shrinks. In general, the smaller they get, the more particular and finicky they get. With the "3 inch guns", for example, many people have found that you really need to replace recoil springs at least every 1,000 rounds, as they wear out quick in such a small platform. In some cases, some people have found their 3 inch 1911's actually wear out their recoil springs so quickly that they need replacement in more like 500rds. By "wear out", I'm talking about overall length of the spring shortening. The bottom line with these guns is they need constant maintenance and serious attention to detail to ensure that they run properly. There are many people that have them, and many people that are good about that preventative maintenance, that don't have much of any problem with them, and that's great. At the end of the day, there are much easier ways, however... Ultimately it's all personal preference.

One of the biggest problems I've seen with 3" guns is the shooter "limp wrists" the gun. Like Sig said, the "...window of operation shrinks." and not having a good, firm grip will not allow that operation to take place in the required time. I've been shooting a 3", .45 ACP Colt Defender for many years and only had issues the first month or so until I learned how to grip the gun properly and provide a solid base for the recoil of the gun. No problems since then. Just my opinion based on my experiences.

I have carried a Defender since 98, and have replaced the springs once. I shoot it regularly. Reliability has not been a problem on my pistol. But I know of others that don't share my experience. The older Defenders (like mine) have staked front sights and are of the white 3 dot variety. I am awaiting the return of my pistol from Novak. I sent them the pistol to have the slide milled and for Novak sights to be installed (upgrade way overdue). They called me last Thursday to discuss the finish of my slide (stainless) after the milling was complete and told me I should get it back this week (hooray!).

I echo the importance of a good firm grip.

just dropping a piece in your rear pocket.. maybe any pocket, has been called "Mexican carry" for ever.. Now that guns are pretty much illegal in Mexico i don't know if it's still a custom or what, but clearly was at one time..
