The ar15 is a fine weapon for sporting use. Some cartridges I would use for deer would be 6.5 Grendel or 25-45 sharps.

Use the 55 grain soft point. Put it through the lungs and they will die.

**** anyone that say an AR in 5.56/223 is for hunting deer. All 3 of my kids killed multiple deer with one. You just have to be smart with your ammo choice.

I don’t know where my little historian friend ran off to. I guess he only comes out to troll gun threads every blue moon

    To ALL,

HERE in TEXAS, a lot of WT DEER WEIGH no more than a COLLIE dog & fall GYD to a SOLID HIT with a 5.56 MM BULLET.

BULLET PLACEMENT & DISTANCE to target is THE KEY. - While I'm NO particular fan of the AR, i would collect a TX WT with my Model 7615, out to 150M.

FWIW, a friend of mine emailed me that he HIT/KILLED a young WT DOE this AM with his Chevy PU. = He called the GW & was told that he could take the deer.
(Todd said that she weighed 67# before being dressed-out,)

MY GUESS is that a solid hit from a .22LR rifle would have just as efficiently killed her as a howitzer would have at that size. = NOBODY can kill anything DEADER THAN DEAD.
(FYI, a notorious poacher from NETX was known to have killed over 100 WT with a suppressed .22LR Ruger rifle, using a STARLIGHT scope.)
He is now "a live-in guest of TDC" plus he lost his rifle, PU & his other poaching gear.

    yours, satx

Although I personally hunt with a 280 Remington, I echo a few others here. The 223 has plenty of pop for deer. First serious lease Hunter I ever knew, exclusively hunted with an old school A2 ar15 and probably harvested a hundred deer with it over the years.

Also remember, any centerfire cartridge is legal in Texas for deer. If a person chooses the 5.56mm or the 223. proper bullets and shot placement, along with limiting range are crucial for optimum results.

A friend's daughter uses a bolt action 223 to hunt deer with. He handloads the cartridges for her rifle. She has taken a couple nice deer with it. IIRC, I think he told me the longest shot was around 80 yards.

    Axxe55,
FYI, I seriously doubt that I will ever change the rifle that I automatically reach for FIRST for anything from Texas jacks to ELK. = My treasured Model 760 in .300SAV.
(I TRUST IT to do the job.)

Nosler Partitions are the gold standard in controlled-expansion bullets.

I just bought some 60-grain to work up .223 hog loads for my AR.
