…but I can’t east red meat for a while, and maybe anymore.

WTF is this shit, you ask?

I’ve been diagnosed with hereditary hemochromatosis, which means my body retains iron. Like, super unhealthy levels that could cause organ damage.

Never knew I had until the last year or so, very strange that it would manifest in my 50’s.

    There’s no cure.
Treatment includes regular blood-letting…seriously, its 2024 and this is the answer?

So now I’m sitting here wondering what the hell I’m supposed to eat.

It’s bad enough that I’m that gluten-free guy from CA. It’s celiac you MFers, another thing that manifested later in life.

    That is all.

    Dang.
Can you do your blood letting at a donation center?
My iron has been too low once or twice and they kick me out. Trying next on the 28th, so hope the supplements get me there.

That 's going to have a serious effect on basic food groups.

After I had the abdominal surgery (Surgeon thought it was a bone punctured my intestine) I swore off ask meat for 3 years. And remember I was a meat cutter. It was kind of hard (mainly on my wife) but I did it. I was eating more Mediterranean & Indian food. I ate lots of hummus & experimented with different flavors like avocado & artichoke. Spicier foods left me fuller feeling. I was ready to do tofu, but the wife absolutely hates it.

I n that time I was eating some would say a healthier diet, but never felt better or lost weight. Eggs & beans can be done in some very interesting ways that were new to me. I will admit I did buy & eat fakon & Morning Star Farms patties.

My iron is way too high, donation centers won’t take it.

When I give, they throw it out.

Another challenge is that I don’t bleed all that much after the dust 50ml or so. Doc wanted my to give 500ml, took 45 mins just to get 75ml and I wasn’t gonna sit there all day.

So instead of giving blood every few weeks, I need to go much more frequently. Yay me

    Oh and this happened:
When my doc referred me to a blood specialist, they didn’t tell me it was at a cancer center. Imagine my surprise when I get a call from a cancer center asking when I’d like to come in…I was like WTF, I have cancer now???

Thankfully they also specialize in blood disorders. And I also don’t have cancer.

Dude that sucks. Maybe you can focus on eating chicken, fish, and shrimp and maybe sneak a small steak about once a month or so without too many issues.
Wife had a business dinner the other night.
Brough home some leftover filet mignon.

I tore into that thing like I hadn’t eaten in a week. Eff it, life is short (might have just shortened it a bit more LOL)

Teriyaki chicken and rice would become a staple for me at that point. Along with BBQ salmon w/ rice. Fish & chips - pick your favorite firm white fleshy fish - mine would be cod / halibut.

Getting older certainly is not for the faint of heart, is it?
Yeah it sucks ass. Had I known, I would have stayed young!

No sir! What got me to the doctor was I thought it was kidney stones. My guess you have heard about the pain related to those. Urine test proved no blood in the urine so I went for a scan. It showed an anomaly forming in my abdomen. They believed it was leakage of gas. After 5 day on the morphine drip the decide to go in. That involved gutting me like a fish & pulling out my intestine to look them over. Not an easy surgery to recover from. I'm just glad I didn't end up shitting out the side of my stomach.

Had a work partner about 20 years ago that had to deal with polycythemia.

I had to help him drain a pint in our department every so often.

Blood problems that require that are not quite as uncommon as you think.

He wasn’t a slow dripper though.
