Where do you see keeping it and where will you be when shooting starts? Maybe you'll have several placed strategically though your house but those that just stick it in the closet like most people would, yes, I think it would take a couple of min to get a vest and put it on.

Minutes? I can run from anywhere in my house to my bedroom closet in a matter of seconds. Vest goes on in about 3 seconds.

From firsthand experience. Unless you just really feel like you need it, then don't bother. It's heavy, hot and cumbersome. You have to practice drawing, moving, shooting, stance with it on because even thin level II or III kevlar makes a difference. Plates and a carrier completely throw a wrench in the system.

Plus, when would you ever really need it? Outside of a mass societal breakdown, it's hard to justify the stuff. None of it is easy to put on. Soft armor would be easiest but trying to throw that on while a burglar is coming....nah. But on the other hand. Your money and time...so by all means if you want some body armor then get some dang body armor.

I just wrote an article on this very subject here. It shouldn't take you that long to throw on your vest, a few seconds is more like it. There's no reason that your armor can't be readily accessible, unless you mount a sidearm on it for some weird reason and you have kids. You can build a simple hanger that breaks down for transport with a 2x4 and some screws.

I find it interesting how many comments there are about the difficulty of putting on a vest or plate carrier.

I never had any problems getting in to my vest/plate carrier with LBV and normal load out all attached.

It was adjusted to fit me, just Velcro the front down and snap the LBV. Done.

Put it on like any other vest, 1 arm at a time.

It reminds me of those who say "you dont want to carry that 10 pound gun all day hunting!"

I think he was getting at the weight of rifle and gear in military, where they do shoot back, compared to "that rifle is too heavy for hunting".

And if I timed myself putting my jacket on it would take more than a couple of seconds to go from my bed/chair/sofa to the hook and put anything on. I can't see being able to put anything on before a kick in or drive bye is completed so depending on your threat concerns armor could be pretty useless.

    I don't disagree one bit.

Body armor is just another tool, like NVG's or a flashlight. Having them on hand and accessible means you have more options. Whether or not it would make sense to employ them is very subjective to your level of training, home layout (position of entry point in relation to your room and family member rooms), and scenario. It can be a better option to get a gun up and cover your immediate thresh hold, where you have an advantage, make your 911 call and gear up further- rather than go charging through your house against an unknown threat. Of course if you have family members that are separated from you relative to the entry point- that's different. Personally, I have a home defense plan where my wife and I alternate security while I gear up., then I'll clear the house with my rifle, body armor and NVG's while she maintains the bedroom and communications with 911.

I didn't say it was pointless or not a tool to have.

I didn't say it was always gonna do any good.

I simply pointed out that I thought some were making it out to be much more difficult to get on than it really is.

Your post is tactical as **** BTW.

Flash, do you suggest Level IIIA or go straight for the Level III steel? The 3A is more expensive, offers less protection but thinner and lighter...

    Steel?

Like AR-500? You have got to be kidding.

What are you buying this for? Odds are you will never wear it in real life.

    I gotcha.

Seemed like people were trying to take a simple post from earlier and make it more than it was.

Also, when on tapatalk tap a post, then select "more" to get the multi quote option. It should allow you to select as many posts as you wish to quote.

Nothing wrong with the current steel plates on the market. When you compare it to level III and Level 4 ceramic counterparts- it is cheaper, lighter, and doesn't require regular x-ray inspection. We wore steel plates operationally because it was easier to conceal for low-vis mission. Nowadays, the coatings have come a long way and have mostly fixed the spalling issues prevalent with earlier designs.

How many days per year do you wear steel plated armor in public?
