You need tooling to build an AK. Buy a simple and inexpensive wrench for an AR and you're in business!

I competed in NRA high power rifle matches for nearly 8 years and wanted to shoot AK's in the 200 yard matches. The best those rifles would do at 200 yards is around 12" groups and that isn't competitive!

In contrast, Shooting a Yugoslavian SKS in NRA matches earned a first and a second place finish! SKS rifles don't have the Kool factor, but they will outshoot an AK easily.

Those who trash the SKS stripper clip loading or use "duck bill" magazines haven't really given the SKS loading method a fair trial. Each NRA match has two stages where mandatory reloading is used. Those stripper clips give fast and efficient reloading.

Removable magazines are the only real advantage with AK over SKS rifles but inaccuracy cooks the AK goose.

Answer to OP AK or AR........AR easily!

which would be better and which would be the best ? overall ?
Being ever the researcher I am I never gave thought till someone asked the question. As a former test engineer I came to conclusion that its like trying to compare apples and oranges, they both have their pluses and minuses and they offset each other more often than not. If I was handed this as an assignment to make a recommendation as to which one was the better, I could not make that recommendation without a specific criteria of what is the better you are looking for.

For the intended people that use them they work superior to the AR, the AR on the other hand for its intended user it is the superior. So it becomes the hands of the user that makes the different but still equal in the final analysis.

That said, where the rubber meets the road, I don't like the AK because everyone that has ever tried to kill me had one in their hands and none of them are here to answer the question in this thread, but I am!

Like it or not, the Kalashnikov has been the most influential weapon ever produced! It has done more to shape the world as we know it more than any other firearm!

I like AKs because of the history that they have in each variation. When scoped and using good quality ammo I’ve gotten 2-3” out of the platform but most of mine have irons.

I do feel the AR is superior but either would work in most cases. With the state of the AK in the current market, it’s expensive to get into a decent one. The WASR is really the only choice out there for an entry level AK. From there you’re looking at Arsenals or something on the used market.

ARs are as cheap as they will ever be right now, that’s where I’m currently spending my money.

I have a hard time considering aN Ak If it's not an Izmash, mainky because I had one and foolishly sold it before i escaped CA.

Then again, it's notnlike I'm running around with a safe full of armalites.

I may consider building one with a demilled kit and a flat. I dunno.

AK definitely has more of a fun-factor for plinking. AR is more versatile and you get the Lego aspect

It's posts like these and several others that have made me regret overlooking this gunboard for so long. As for me, the term "conflicted" comes to mind when discussing anything AK related. It took me almost 20 years to finally, sort of finally, see the AK as a tool and nothing more. I carried one in Vietnam as much as my CAR15 and own two at present.
