My son in law has been a deputy for 5 years.
Only gun he owns is his duty pistol.
There's lots of cops that ain't into guns. The duty weapon is their first and only handgun. It's nothing but a tool issued to them.

I’m so glad to see tons of LEOs training every time I shoot a defensive pistol match or steel challenge match. Most of them I see (groups of them) are very good, too.
This made me laugh out loud... that's just hilarious.
Had something similar when I did the CHL qual. Guy next to me put a round into my target near an edge. Instructor just shook his head.
All the ones I see shoot better than me (so that’s not saying much) in a USPSA style or defense pistol club scenario. And these guys must go often because every time I go they are there.See if you can accompany any Military Police to the range. Some qualify on a private range because the range on base is taken. Then report back on the accuracy...lol

Yes I have.Ever had somebody point a gun at you? Ever have the image of the round end of a shotgun muzzle stuck in your head? Ever had tunnel vision? Not garden variety stress, real life tunnel vision?
Yep. The range isn't the same. At all. Neither was the hole in the floor of the patrol room where an officer shot the floor while playing with his sidearm.
Yep
Yes I have.
1. Check the requirement for hiring an officer in the metroplex. There is a bit more than having a HS education.
2. I hear how cops are terrible shooters compared to civilians........from civilians. Do you have some study to show that because I sure as hell do not know of one.
Are some cops bad shooters? Sure. Seeing that I have actually instructed both, I can say that the deciding factor is the amount of training a cop or civilian does. I have seen pilots unable to put on the holster given to them for the FFDO program but you don't see me saying all pilots are idiots and should not carrying a gun in the cockpit.
Fault the Metro guy all you want, that seems to be the popular thing to do but it still doesn't make it right.

I never said cops are bad shooters.
The poorest shots I've ever seen were police officers. Pencil holes in targets to get them qualified.
...Never seen a civilian shoot a concrete floor out of being dumb.
Saw it happen recently and wrote about it on here. Short version:
Indoor range with two ROs watching 3-4 shooters. Dude is behind the firing line kneeling on one knee. Goes to holster pistol while behind the firing line. NDs a hollow point in the concrete floor, fragments and shards go everywhere.

I was 20yo. Went to an indoor range in Temple. The onwer was a Temple police officer. He rented me a 41mag S&W revolver in stainless. Told me the trigger was polished. I cock the hammer and ~touch~ the trigger. Bang. It was well polished.
I shot the roof. Does that count?
Maybe it is just the guys you know? Not every coop is a shooter. We can all agree on that BUT the funny thing is folks are saying this stuff in a thread about a metro guy that DID drop a murderer. That is what is strange. They then want to come up with hypotheticals that did not happen or they question the policy violation as if they were driving the car chasing murderers and exchanging gun fire. I guess it is kinda comical and it makes my down time go quicker.Work a range long enough you'll see civies shooting everything imaginable......
That said, it does amaze me of all the cops I know..... very, very few actually train or shoot on a regular basis....just because they are cops doesn't make them gun experts or good shooters....
