Anyone who has been around guns and shooting for any length of time can write a book about idiots behind the counter and their misinformation.
We've all heard inane drivel like "the .22lr enters the body and bounces around inside tearing everything up", to "racking the slide on a pump shotgun causes buildings to crumble and instant death".
Don't listen to any of it.
Better yet do not ask them anything except what is directly related to the sale. It saves on the heartburn.
Purchase what you want and ignore the doofusses.
999 times out of 1000 they've never fired a gun like you're buying anyway.

QUOTE: " do not ask them anything except what is directly related to the sale" AMEN !

Have you ever worked behind a gun counter? We hear the same crap several times a day, and get talked to like an idiot when you explain the truth to them, haha.

I've sold guns to both Jack Hoff and Mike Hunt. Had several people seriously ask for guns that "just hurt people, I don't want to kill them".

Had a woman come in asking what's a good gun to shoot someone with(that shot her the night before) that won't kill them...told to get the "eff" out.

Countless felons telling you of their crimes, then asking to see firearms.

People wanting several hundred for hi-points(glock foe-tay).

A lot of folks smoke blunts in the parking lot/on the way before wanting to handle firearms apparently, they walk in and the smell fills the store, they don't get to see anything.

Saw a kid showing a guy a glock 19, he dissembled it down to a pile of parts while the kid watched and just walked away.

Been in small stores while they are being cased for a robbery. Hanging out in one store and the owners telling me about all the sketchy people coming in and guy comes in all nervous asking weird questions, but he won't walk to the counter(only about half way) his buddies in a car outside idling.

He sees the owner has an SMG next to him and asks "that a machine gun?", owner says "yeah". Guy turns and walks quickly out of the store and you can see a pistol tucked into his waistband. Superior firepower won that time I guess.

All of my dealings with Cabelas has been outstandingly good.

Knowledgeable, helpful gun guys (a rarity I fully appreciate) and generally all the people in my local Cabelas have been very good.

I can't say the same for Academy or the Walmart gun guys. Terrible or indifferent for the most part. Kinda hit and miss depending on whose working that day, but in general terrible.

Too many gun sales folks just make up stuff or just take some bs they were told as fact and regurgitate it to the next customer.

If I don't know an answer I'll tell you I don't , but I'll also do my best to find out the answer immediately. My Google powers are strong.

On the other hand I've been cussed out for not knowing if a random Turkish shotgun held five or six rounds. Told him "I'm not really sure but I'll do a search and find out" apparently I'm a "f#cking idiot" for not remembering every detail of the literal several hundred firearms we had in stock, and he expected we know every minute detail.

Or I've had a few people that want to know every little detail about metallurgy for a firearm, no I don't know where the materials originated or who at the factory machined it.

Also too many people think the manufacturing date has something to go with value. "This is last years model I should get a discount" it's not a used car.

What's with security guards coming into gun stores and trying to make it seem like they are actual police officers? "Listen to this story about my latest pursuit" you mean the 300 pound lady on a hovaround that stole a snickers?

I've seen several wearing badges "off duty"on belts or around the neck like a vice cop and they all act like they are Rambo(obviously not all but this particular flavor of dummy). They always want to get into the middle of your sales trying to get the customer to buy what they own. They all ask for LEO discounts too, dude you work at the mall.

    End rant.

    Gunz are icky.
Retardism exists on BOTH sides of the counter.
I've learned to just keep conversation limited and complete the transaction.
I'm not there to make life-long friends. I'm there to purchase a firearm.
Working behind the counter is taxing I'm sure. The endless stream of tire kickers would get to me too.
I try to keep from bothering the counter guy with requests and keep the finger banging to a very bare minimum. It does feel disrespectful when I do ask to see something and am treated with disdain and sometimes even hostility. That is when I go elsewhere.
I also believe in giving a shop several chances.
We all know that one employee isn't every employee.
Counter Commando X is a loud mouthed jackass who is ex-C.I.A./SEAL/SWAT/Climbed Mt.Everest blindfolded, naked, while drunk/etc. while Counter Guy Y is a cool dude.

    AKMike,

OK, but you may be missing out on a hilarious (though pitiful) opportunity to laugh at 'wannabe' fill in the blanks...cops or pretend ex-special forces dipshits.

My rule of thumb - if they're bragging about being gun guys, they're lying.

The amount of people who believe their being Leo/mil or someone they know being Leo/mil makes them firearms Gods is also annoying.

I've met SEALs, Rangers, (whatever true badass here) they NEVER act like that. Marcus luttrell is real down to earth he just acts like some random guy who likes guns, however Private POG from Motorpool was the guy the movie Shooter was based on.

Just talk guns, you don't have to baffle me with BS, lol.

My favorite customers are the old men who are walking encyclopedias for firearms, I always get in trouble to talking to them too long. Doesn't bother me a bit for a customer to teach me something.

Ive met a bunch of professional athletes. I don't follow them so I had no idea who they were, but they are usually good customers. I'm sure they enjoy my just talking guns instead of hounding them about being whoever.

To this day I have no idea who the astros players I helped one day are, haha. Have Texans players visit where I work now.

On the subject of random people, I hate to say it but Quanell X(New black panther party) is actually a pretty nice guy barring political and ideology differences. He comes into my current job sometimes.

I once caught the tail end of a conversation of an Academy employee telling a customer how he hunted hogs with an air rifle. "It's all in the shot placement."

To be fair they have 9mm-.50cal airguns made for hunting. Hell a guy used to bring a high end model to the range that shot at center fire rifle velocities(2000 or more)

Nice to hear that I am not the only one that gets the felons or the " I just want to wound someone" customers. The ones I really hate to see, are the ones that tell the bleeding hearts that anything smaller than a .40 cal or 30-06 won't kill anything, just wound it.
