    Japan is outlandishly expensive.

Even produce in a grocery store is way too costly.

And, I find the people way too polite (it's exhausting) but, perhaps I'm mistaking politeness for inscrutability....
Japan places honor higher than most Americans I'm afraid to say. I was more afraid of foreigners then I was the Japanese. I was in awe of how little crime there was there, but of course our prisons are like staying at the Hilton compared to theirs, plus as far as I know they don't have parole.

I couldn't find a Cattleman's in Tokyo, and when you spend months at a time in Japan, finding any food that is close to what you get back home is a treat.

This is true. When I was in Moscow I had been eating at the hotel I was staying at just out of convenience (at $90 a sitting US). I happened to stumble on a TGIFridays on one of my outings and it was the best. Way more happening, food similar to the US, way friendlier there and the cost was comparable to the US as well. Spent many an evening there with the locals who thought I was always the guest of honor.

My wife and I tried "outback" once and it suuuuuuuuucccccckkkkkeeeeeddddd!

And, I'm not a picky eater.. Honestly, I liked the food in the high school cafeteria, college and the Army.

If tr (never been in one) is similar, that'll be a no go.

Ruth Chris: The last steak and everyone prior were outstanding!

That word reminds of when I was in the Army 'outstanding' being the most over used word along with the term 'in my military mind'.

Both drove me crazy, ok, crazier..

Although it cost me a good deal of per diem, I had Kobe beef in a traditional Japanese style dinner that was amazing.

No doubt, about the cost or the amazing part. I need to spring for some the next time I go back. I wonder if it is cheaper getting Kobe beef there than getting it here because it can be ridiculous here?

Wagyu is the preferred term for some Japanese.

As I stated previously having used the term Kobe got me treated with contempt by one Japanese guy, so they're not always polite.
