Noting a recent post here quoting an article describing the declining relative strength of the NRA, I felt that a separate thread was warranted, as so many current II-A supporters don't know or understand the background.

Speaking as a long term NRA & TSRA "Life Member"; the problem is that what was once our "NRA" has become Wayne's "LaPierre-NRA".

No matter what kind of job he may have done, it is unhealthy for a members-driven organization to remain a dictatorship for so long.

In the wake of the "Knox Uprisings", little Wayne was able to set-up an unassailable fortress of his own via the "Nominating Committee" and other regulatory devices, to insure that Wayne gets his way, no matter what the actual members think or say.

Then, he abused the "ILA" in such way as to enter our LOCAL politics, without the proper intelligence or advisors to carry it off.

If we are to "save" "our" NRA, the time for Wayne to go is long past.

I would hope that those ensconed in the "Nominating Committee" could see the light and refuse to serve his dictatorship. "Uncle Ted", Colonel North, Mr. Tom Selleck, etc; are Y'all paying attention here?

So, until Wayne dies, or until someone finds a way to breech his impenetrable administrative "fortress", we are stuck with a "LaPierre NRA".

Our only alternative today is to "vote with our feet", and with our dollars.

Like it, or not, this is today's NRA.

Today's NRA is as useless as the old NRA. Give us more money and we will do nothing again is today's NRA.

No, the NRA is far from "useless"; but it does need more actual member participation, and to better focus its political efforts at national and state levels.

I don't advocate abandoning our NRA, just in abandoning the "Nominating Committee" and other LaPierre-isms !

Support NRA, GOA and any other organization you can afford.

We’ll need all the help we can get in this endless fight or get ready for defeat.

Abandoning the NRA only encourage leftist to redouble counter attacks against us.

The end of this month is the end of my membership in the NRA. I agree with the OP. The NRA is its own swamp. I may return but it will be long after the Pepe LaPew show is over. Moved to GOA. They appear to be unwilling to sell off some portions of the 2nd amendment to look good on others. As I've said before I don't give a rats ass about bump stocks, but they do not a machine gun make. Trump can continue to cave on the basics but I'm not paying dues to be part of it.

Just like any other larger organization, whether business-related, government-related, or political, they're not perfect. I'm sure there are some things that should change and hopefully will change. However I will continue to support them not only for what they represent now, but what they've represented for decades.

I shudder to think where we'd be without them. Change is sometimes necessary and happens, but abandonment to me is not on the table. Mine is up next month and I'll be renewing.

Well, we may have been spared the NFA and for sure the 1968 gun control act.

Fair point going back to the '30s and the '60s. But given the big picture and actions of the NRA politically, which really started mid '70s and took serious hold in the early '90s when the modern day assault on private firearm ownership got heated up, the more obvious answer is we may be throwing rocks against any threats or intruders....that is if we were obeying the assumed laws in their absence and not in jail for not obeying such.

They've been on the front lines and fighting successfully against a lot of shit over the past 30-40 years and continue to do so. Again, perfect? No. But big picture is we are better off having them around IMO.

The NRA threw bumpstocks under the bus long before Trump. I'm not sure Trump even owns a gun, much less be a gun guy, so I'm sure that decision was influenced by others.

Although I hate the Fudd mentality of those in power at the NRA, they still are the biggest, most powerful gun lobbyist, and like a conservative politician I feel a need to support them, because the alternative would be worse.

If this were accurate, we may have beeen spared the 1994 AWB and NICS as well.

After all, the 94 AWB only passed Congress by 2 votes and had ( I think) 40 Republicans voting for it.

Find it hard to believe that the “ strongest 2A lobbying group” couldn’t get a Mississippi Republican Congressman and one or two North Carolina Republicans to vote no.

The NRA you are describing did not come around until the late 90’s and really until the early 2000’s

We in next-door Louisiana, have similar problems with our "Republican" officials. When pressed as to just why the penalty for a licensed, vetted, non-criminal for carrying in a "restricted area" is greater than for the general public, or even for some criminals, they reply something like "Well, the pastors and schoolteachers demanded it!"

I support the NRA and GOA 100% and see them as the reasons we don't need to turn in our guns and take up knitting!

I am a member of two gun clubs that receive help from the NRA to keep their facilities in top condition and hold regular pistol and rifle competition. Both clubs have 100% NRA membership.

Don't like the NRA? Feel free to move to England. You'll enjoy their "Gun Free" society! Trashing the NRA will help Clinton, Schumer, Pelosi, Feinstein, Obama and others make those gun bans a a reality in the USA!

You only get TWO choices. Fight the Liberals with the NRA, GOA and other patriot organizations OR snuggle up to Feinstein and Pelosi as they tear up the Constitution and Bill of Rights!
