Well, cheap(ish) ammo was the ONLY reason we ever went into Walmart. If we picked up a few other items while we were there, then Walmart profited even more from ammo availability.

Everything I can get at Walmart I can get online and get it cheaper. Delivered. I hope this move costs them a bundle.

No more open carry in their stores either!

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/03/the-full-memo-from-walmarts-ceo-about-pulling-back-on-gun-sales.html

That is, "Walmart is also asking customers at Walmart and Sam’s Club to no longer openly carry firearms in stores, in states where 'open carry' is allowed, unless authorized law enforcement officers are present."

It will be interesting to see how they will enforce that unless they put up 30.07 signs. Yes, a manager could walk the store and "ask" people to leave, but is that effectively "giving notice?" Some would argue that it is, but if given a choice then refusing to do so, what happens then?
Read 30.07. It actually uses the phrase verbal notice

Even less reason to go in ChinaMart anyway. They have ruined businesses and destroyed communities the world over. Why am I not surprised? If they cease to offer what We the People want, their status as #1 will fade. Not to mention their "Deer" rifle ammo is for the most part, a better man killer than 5.56mm. Hunter stuff is waiting for the next excuse. A lot of low wage jobs will fade with them.
Sadly in many places there is no other choice, and that too is ChinaMarts fault.

"Ruined businesses and destroyed communities". So where do all of those people who work at Wal Mart live? Where do the local sales taxes go?

Verbal notice by anyone with “apparent ” authority. This could be a security guard, cashier, the guy that greets you or the guy that checks your receipt when you leave.

"The company, America's largest retailer, said it will stop selling handgun ammunition and ammunition commonly used in assault-style weapons after selling all of its current inventory. Walmart (WMT) will also stop selling handguns in Alaska, the only state where it still sells handguns. And Walmart will request that customers no longer openly carry guns into its 4,700 US stores, or its Sam's Club stores, in states that allow open carry.

"It's clear to us that the status quo is unacceptable," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a memo to employees on Tuesday."

Academy, Cabelas, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, all the online stores, gun shows ... There's plenty of competition.
Walmart is the store that keeps Academy competitive. The others you named are all 20%+ higher than Walmart and Academy.

Online prices seem to be based on WMs price point.( I buy enough ammo to see trends) online will still compete with each other so that is good, but will Academy now price ammo along the lines of BP/Cabelas and GM?

Since I’m not a WM shopper, not much I can do about their choices and policies.

It’ll be intuit see how this works out for them.
