I can't carry while working. (field service) I carry everywhere legal and know not to ask my boss if guns are allowed in the company vehicles. I only leave my gun at home for plane trips and federal jobs.

I liked the article, it was a good read, and it made me recall this one from 1981:

    LETTER FROM AN ANGRY READER

Some of the older among us may remember that one fondly. Some of you younger folks may like it as well. I like the intensity of LETTER FROM AN ANGRY READER; intensity, I think, is what is needed to get some on the fence folks or even anti-gun people to thinking the right way about those of us who carry.

So in 1981 it was easier to get a carry permit in LA than Texas?

I do not know about that but in CA just about everything legal was easier in 1981 - now everything illegal seems easier. Just in case you are wondering about the veracity of the article, I have never heard anyone, when the article first came out (that is when I first read it) nor years later, question how long it took him to get his permit back then and debunk him on the time frame.

I was pretty young in 1981, but back then CA was solidly conservative.

And from what I’ve read, Texas Gun laws haven’t always been as 2A friendly as they are now.

I think that was the case. Texas was the first in the country to ban carrying pistols thanks to the carpetbaggers running the state in 1871. We didn’t start getting our gun rights back until Bush’s administration in the 90’s

Bill is correct. In Texas, carrying of long guns has always been permitted. However, the same cannot be said of sidearms (hand guns). Contrary to what Hollywood may have shown in its “Westerns”, the new state constitution of 1870 passed during Reconstruction (known as “Yankee Occupation” to southerners) prohibited the carrying of pistols on your person or in your saddle bags. As I recall, the fine was quite steep; I think it was $25 (a lot of money, in those days) AND confiscation of the sidearm(s). This didn’t apply if on your own land. [Note: Typically, allowances were made for enforcement of this law, especially in west Texas].

Texas State Legislature passed concealed carry (shall issue) in 1995 and the ‘Castle Doctrine’ and strong ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws in 2007. Open Carry was permitted in 2016 but requires the License To Carry (LTC) permit. Again, these laws don’t apply to carrying on your own land.

Texas liberally allows the use of ‘deadly force’ to protect property (with a few qualifications) - especially during the night hours. Laws written during cattle rustling and pre-electricity days, still on the books (and have been used successfully in more recent times). One of the few states to do so.

Back in the 70's and early 80's it was near impossible to get a carry permit. However if you were known to carry large sums of money (>$100) you could carry a handgun in the vehicle if traveling more than one county from your residence. Actually I think you had to have a county between your destination and home. So from Dallas County you would pass thru Tarrant and be OK in Parker co.

I started working from home 2 weeks ago. Before that I carried everyday. Usually it was a colt defender, 327pc, or 340pd. Now I just have my HD weapons near by, m45a1,mossberg500, colt6920. I still like to keep the 340pd in my shorts pocket around the house though.

My current company doesn’t have a policy against carrying a gun. I may need to change companies in the near future and I worry about getting stuck at an anti gun company. Although, concealed is concealed. As long as I’m legal, getting killed because I don’t have my gun is a bit worse than getting fired because I do.

Retired now; so at home mostly - rarely actually carry at home but something loaded is always within easy/quick reach.

My employer initially issued a “no guns on premises” order - meaning: building AND parking lot. Then the Texas Legislature stepped in and said a private employer could control their building but not vehicle parking. (Had to do with an extended interpretation of the Castle Doctrine and the right to travel freely, as I recall). Kinda convoluted legalese but worked in favor of concealed carriers. So my employer was forced to remove the “no guns allowed” signs at the fenced parking lots and just put them at building entrances. (Texas’ infamous 30.06 & 30.07 signage requirements).

My former employer issued a No Guns (including parking lots) before they made some drastic management and commission changes. It had been a gun friendly company for decades. However New Yorkers took it over. They didn’t care about the law making it illegal to ban guns in parking lots.

    I quit shortly after
