Let me just start by saying ..damn.

Within the past 3 years I bought 2 Rossi revolvers just to keep around the ranch for fun. One was an 8 shot 22lr... great gun for small critters and its been fun.
    The 2nd was a 4” 38 Special, blued.
I found it a pawn shop, new for around $300 and it had a butter smooth action and thought it would be a good training gun for teaching my wife to shoot revolvers.
It was fun and I shot it a lot at the gun range with no issues.

Sometime ago, pretty sure it was on TGT, I found out that certain Rossi revolvers had a safety recall.
Went to the recall webpage and put in the serial numbers and found that the 38 was under recall.

I filled out the forms online and they sent me a FedEx label so back in Jan or Feb I boxed it up and sent it off.

I never heard anything so I started rattling the cage a little and got a call back today from a Georgia area code.. Brazetech....Taurus...

They said they had the gun and inspected it and is was “non -repairable “
Whatever that means....They said they can’t send it back and said they would like to offer a settlement of a new replacement revolver...
It’s a take it or leave it thing..I’m guessing so I said sure..

Turns out they are sending me a factory new Model 82 Taurus..
    That’s right.. a damn Taurus..
I heard that Rossi sold to them sometime back.. and I don’t like the brand, but I figure I can either keep it and use it like I did the Rossi or just sell the damn thing..

So, all the jabbing I’ve done over the years has come back to haunt me..
    Damn the luck....lol

I would step up and say friends don’t let friends buy a Taurus, but since its free, I guess I’ll just shun you for a while.

Just curious, in this particular situation where the manufacture is sending it back, will they have to send it through an FFL or can they send it directly to you? Does it make a difference that it will be a different gun, or will they be sending you a voucher/coupon for the purchase of a new firearm?

Since it's from the manufacturer, and being returned to the owner - they can/will ship it directly. Since it's a warranty replacement, it's replacement is considered the "same gun".

They are sending me a new gun in the box to the FFL of my choice for $0
I'll pay the transfer fee and they will reimburse me for that
    The end

I thought you were posting about the dems. Lol.

Taurus will either provide years of faithful uneventful use or you will want to throw it as far as you can into the dump. That's the problem with them, they expect customers to be the Quality control with a lifetime warranty.

ETA that and MIM parts which I would replace the minute you get it.

The new gun retails for around 300 bucks.
Perhaps go trade as NIB on a Rugie or SW.

I probably will. The FFL that will receive it is a Taurus dealer so I may just see what they will give me for it in store credit. They almost always have something there in the case I am interested in

I'm not replacing anything on it
    That would mean spending money
    You cant polish a turd
I'll give you 250 for it sight unseen. After I close on my house. Lol

They're not all turds. But even so I won't buy a Taurus unless it's new and the dealer allows me some quality time inspecting it. And a good price.

Yes, in the end guns are cheap enough nowadays not to have to deal with the ?.

Ok maybe 225 and a whataburger.

Growing up (not in the US), I remember how me and my dad used to make fun of this car manufacturer - Skoda. In the 90s, they made pieces of junk with 4 wheels that some confused to be "cars". Unreliable, poor handling, complete junk.

Some years passed by, Skoda got their act together, and they started making legitimate vehicles. Perhaps it was the acquisition by vw, perhaps something else, who knows.

Before you know it, from garbage, through mediocre, now they're making great cars - some will argue best in class, and funny enough it came to the point of my own father owning a Skoda, which turned out to be the best car he ever owned.

    My point?
We (consumers in general, and us consumers in particular) have a tendency to reduce a brand to a soundbite, usually it originates for a good reason, but even still. The main question here is whether you judge hardware by the team it's a part of, or by its performance, and whether you're willing to change your mind if they change.

I don't know whether you got a POS, a mediocre or a great pistol. If you don't like it you definitely shouldn't own it, but personally i wouldn't jump on selling it before giving it a shot, figuratively and literally (:

In the case of Taurus I agree with everything your saying.

1 yes it may be a good one. Sadly it may also be a turd.

2 in the case of their reputation, no one is going off a sound bite. It is built on dacades of actual real life experiences.

Thos problem is, with guns especially, that in today's age of cnc machines and the infantessimle variables and error rates they give there is absolutely no excuse for not being perfect every time

Younger gun owners are spoiled by this, while older gun owners remember the variability that comes from all the stuff by hand on older guns.

After initial investment the cnc machine should save manufacturers money and increase quality but that requires a couple things. Tool head management and QC. They go hand in hand. They only way to ensure that repeatability is a proper measurement and QC program to ensure things aren't getting out of specs. Taurus seems to think this is an area they can save money on. Its shocking cause it allows you to catch the increase in variance that comes from worn tool/cutting heads because when you get right down to it worn tools is about the only thing that can screw up a gun at this point in the process.

I have no problem with many of the cosmetic finishing steps taurus deletes, guns are tools and they on loo y need to work and be durable for me at this price point. I do take issue with the MIM parts and assembly issues for the same reason.

MIM parts are just not something I want to have in something I trust my life to. Taurus isnt the only gun manufacturer to use MIM parts, intact they make MIM parts for other big name manufacturers, or did last time I checked.

It's all about cost cutting to Taurus which is sad because fir just a couple dollars more on the front end they could still produce inexpensive guns that are 100% quality not hit or miss.

So Ya, Taurus rep is well earned and it's all about how you look at it.

I've always found that a piece of turd run through twice is still a piece of turn....just sayin'!
But, something got good use out of that turd the second time thru. Hopefully.

    Just saying.

The point is are you willing to eat steamy runny shit just to get a couple pieces of corn?

If you life depends on it you might, but in this instance timing is everything and weather you're there yet is a very personal decision.

You're right, their reputation is well earned - but it doesn't mean that it cannot be turned.
The last gen G2 and G3, along with the TX22, are getting very positive reviews from, well, basically every reviewer I've seen so far. What I'm saying is - perhaps they got their act together, and perhaps they're still garbage. My point is that, personally, I'd rather judge by data ([reputation] + [professional long-term reviews] + [user reviews]) instead of 100% relying on just one of these artifacts. Therefore, I wouldn't pay top dollar to purchase a Taurus even if the reviews were off the chart (because reputation), but I also wouldn't completely avoid from giving them a shot if they're priced good enough (because reviews).

Taurus always gets good reviews. That's because, 1 yes they have good ideas and can make good guns at good price points, and 2 having a person review a product from a paying advertiser kinda creates a stinking bias.

Taurus problem is their QC. Until that's fixed and all the bad stuff is fixed that's our there it won't change. Taurus isnt willing to make that investment. So they will never cgange.

Most of the people posting in this thread aren’t posting because of some “sound bite” they’ve heard about Taurus and their QC issues. When they post specific problems and concerns with Taurus, those are usually problems they’ve run into during previous dealings with Taurus. Your post reads like some advice for OP to try a Taurus and see if he likes it. I believe you’ll find he has owned Taurus in the past, and like all the rest of us posting here, has a good reason for not wanting another one.
