Just checking to see if this ever got settled...

    Haha I forgot about this.

A friend sent me one, and I ended up getting a few more CAT rated, putting together a couple IFAKs, one for bug out and a spare to carry say if we go hiking with the family. One for the car, etc.

Went over to help my daughter clean out her garage. She was a medic in the Army in Afghanistan. She had first aid kits out the wazoo. I picked up 4 of them. Pretty well stocked with most everything. Keep one big one and one small one in each car. Plenty of refill stuff too. save me hundreds from buying any.

My son was on I-10 on the way to see us not long a ago and the car right in front of him swerved, on to the shoulder and the driver lost control. His car ran right into a shear stone wall where they had cut through for the highway and flipped upside down and the car caught on fire. The driver was unconscious. My son pulled over along with about three other trucks. They forced the door open and my son cut his seat belt with his EDC and they got him out. He was a big dude. Luckily one of the guys had a fire extinguisher and another had a first aid kit in their vehicle. Together, they most assuredly saved his life because they were able to put out the fire, cut him out of the car and stop the bleeding. It took over 20 minutes for paramedics and police to show up.

It made a believer out of me. I now carry a fire extinguisher and a severe bleed kit, which contains a tourniquet in the truck along with other assorted goodies.

I wear a belt every day so I've always got a tourniquet with me
Have a buddy with a stop watch time you going from wearing the belt to when he cannot feel a radial pulse on your own arm and time you a second time again for a popiliteal pulse (behind your knee).

Report your times back for us.

On a larger bleed you will pass out before you get it stopped, if you can even stop it. if you're alone, that means you're dead.

You are wearing a Crescent wrench around your waist and you need a hammer. Sure, you can hit something with a Crescent wrench, but it will never be a hammer.

Seriously, go time yourself from wearing your belt to the cessation of perfusion and see if it really works. Remember to not use your injured arm... and that you may need to use your uninjured arm/hand again. (You get shot, stop the bleed, and get back in the fight, or to rescue another passenger in a vehicle etc)

If you wear a belt you are carrying one. Reason I know, lost my right hand in a farm accident in a remote area in South Texas. Traumatic amputation in the field. Hour and a half ride to the nearest hospital. My brother used his belt to stop the bleeding...that was 40 years ago.

No, no youre not. Youre carrying a crescent wrench when you need a hammer

"Brother helped" are the key words here. That's about as smart as relying on EMS or police, or a good Samaritan passing by. Handy when it happens, but you shouldn't rely on it.

Your IFAK should be set up so you can fix you by yourself

An actual TQ can be used one-handed for self rescue. Planning on having someone else to there to have free hands to help is piss poor planning. In a traumatic car crash, you may be alone, or people may be trying to rescue others. In a combat event, you again could be alone or anyone around might be preoccupied with shooting back at the bad guy while you are left to fix yourself

Willful ignorance is no excuse to plan poorly.

Yeah, but what if both hands were amputated? Then what?

I assume you're wearing your IFAK now. If not, that's piss-poor planning. Probly should have it in the shower too in case you slip through the glass door.

Willful arrogance is no excuse to think poorly.

A good belt will work in a pinch that's true, but an actual tourniquet designed specifically for those types of wounds is better. Sorry about your hand that had to suck.

So, are you saying that we should have 5 TQs already loosely in place - one at each mid-thigh, one at each elbow, & a bandana around the neck -ready to tighten? And if not, then we should just stand around with our feet shoulder-width apart to make it easier to bend over & kiss our ass goodbye if we should bleed?

When I pulled my hand out of the machine I had enough wits about me to pinch off my brachial artery. Not sure how long I could have held it. I was 21 years old. Lots of things go through your mind in an emergency especially if you are the emergency. I've made it to 62 and grateful for everyday
