I've been thinking about volunteering for jury duty in Bowie County. I am not sure if it is even possible to do so but if it is possible, then I figure why not. I seem to recall that you cannot volunteer for federal jury duty but have no clue about doing so at a county court. I am retired and life in and around Texarkana, TX is abysmally boring. So, I went to the county website a few days ago to check on how to do it, I did not find diddly squat about it. Maybe it is not something they do.

If I still feel the urge after Jan. 1, I may go to the county court building to inquire about if it is possible and if so then how to do it. Who knows, I may meet some interesting folks and if we get sequestered, maybe we can watch

I would suspect being able to "volunteer" for any jury duty would not be allowed, regardless of the court system involved.

Anyone volunteering for jury duty would most likely be viewed with skepticism and suspicion, from both sides of the aisle, defense and prosecution. Wondering what agenda a volunteering jury member might have, or what disruptions they might be looking to make with the trial.

While I was still in the Army and lived in DC I got notice for jury duty. I was excused due to being on active duty. On my way to sign the form, I ended up talking withe head of maintenance in the building where I lived about jury duty. He said, that in DC, they do not like jurors who are ex-military, with any college, or LEO family members. He said as soon as I get the next notice, call them and tell them I was all three. Usually, they would take you off the list over the phone. After I got out, I stayed in DC for another 18 months and got a jury notice. I called them and they took me off the list for that summons.
    That is true everywhere.

The defense wants a jury they can confuse and dazzle. Those with critical thinking skills and those with a sense of duty and more difficult to do that to.

    EDIT:
If you got picked I'm not saying you're stupid, you just you fooled the some really smart people into thinking you were, or they wanted someone smart. While the defense generally doesn't want Harvard material on the jury, I'd imagine it is case specific. Rittenhouse's attys would have likely wanted a higher IQ than the persecutor (yes, thats right) onnthat case.

I recently got notice for federal jury duty and used my age as an excuse to get out. The court system is completely arrogant about treating jurors with no respect for their time, comfort or finances. The lowest paid employee in the court is still paid more than jurors. Criminals are treated better than jurors and if you don’t show you are a criminal. Been on a jury once and it is very scary how some people will convict someone and ruin their life for essentially a non crime. And the real white collar criminals that steal multi thousands are not prosecuted while poor criminals go to jail.

It has always made me wonder as to why so many people dread jury duty, and look for any reasonable excuse to get out of doing their civic duty.

Yes, I can think of many more pleasant and productive ways to spend my day, but I also think, what if it were me sitting in court for a trial that could have grave implications and results for the future of my life.

Would I want twelve people that were either too stupid, or just unlucky enough to be able to get out of jury duty? Or people that were concerned with doing their civic responsibility in upholding our judicial system to be fair and balanced?

Who would you want deciding your future?

Because work at your real job piles up even if you are not there.

Neither, I would go with a Bench Trial.

Carry a roll of rope into court room and tell the judge to hang the suspect, his atty, his relatives and his dog.

As long as the defense or the prosecution thinks you're possible biased against them, they'll excuse you.

I understand that. But IMO, jury duty is part of our civic duty, just as voting is. It's suppose to be the one way we can keep our judicial system fair and balanced.

I'm not sure I would want my fate for the future being decided by one person. Personally, I'd rather take my chances with twelve people.

I always get dismissed for jury duty in my county. I have a personal beef with the crooked DA. I just inform the Judge that whomever is accused of a crime by this DA will automatically get a Not Guilty vote from me if I'm in the jury.

I've served on a jury twice before in Denton and Tarrant counties. Both trials were interesting, and only lasted a couple days.

I guess some people just do not like govt mandates.
I don't like government mandates either. I think that happened because too many people began shirking their civic duties, and finding enough people for a jury pool became difficult, unless they imposed some sort of penalty for ignoring a jury summons.

But even that seems to go unenforced. I can't recall the last time I have heard of anyone being jailed for contempt of court for ignoring a jury summons.

    I sure don't like them.

Like taxes, jury duty irks me when the government demands either something from my labor or my labor itself. I would rather live far away from anyone and be my own king with power and authority subject only to God's law, but alas...

Without a respected jury and they verdicts I suspect we would soon be dealing with mobs and extrajudicial killings pretty quickly.

Again, jury duty is slave labor. $6 per day. I ran a business with 7-8 employees, no income if I wasn't there. How long could I keep my business if I was on a long trial? So who can do this? Retired people, government employees, people that automatically get paid whether they work or not. Civic duty does not mean becoming slave labor. And even $6 a day, you don't get paid unless you are actually called up. You still have to become part of the pool until they dismiss you at no pay which means you close down your shop, no income to feed your family, etc. The jury system makes you an indentured servant. And when you do serve you find out what a bunch of idiots you are with. Do you seriously believe that you are in a system where you are tried by your equals? For most I bet it is "lets get this over as fast as possible" and then there are the Karen's....

You never pic someone who volunteers to be a mod as a mod on a forum and you never pick a juror who volunteers to be a juror.

I’ve been on several. It was an interesting experience.
Some of the jury pool excuses I heard that were successful in getting unselected or preemptively stricken:

‘I read about him and pretty sure he’s guilty.’

‘I know (one of the parties in this case).’

‘Why would the cop arrest him if he weren’t guilty?’

Conversely, the one who said ‘I’m not interested in being on a jury’ was picked.

    Have fun.
