There's already competition to EV - methane gas and hydrogen, to name two. Problem is (as always), someone got into a position of power in .gov and decided to dictate a 2nd-rate, Not Ready For Prime Time "solution" that's going to come back to bit us in the ass.....kinda like gasohol......
Most government solutions are worse than the original problem.

EV and all of this climate change stuff will not be solved until the ideal energy source is developed and that is fusion. Won't be in my lifetime but will come.

EV is not a reasonable "future". It's an artificial change that's being promoted by the Left. They WANT vehicles to be so high priced that normal people can't afford them. Vehicles for the elite ("The Crust"); Public transportation for the masses. Self-driving vehicles will insure that young people don't even learn how to drive. That way, public transportation will be so normal that they won't object to it. The masses will be easier to control. Want to protest? We'll just shut down your transportation. This is why the Left is so enamored with trains. Every public transport train they build loses money. Yet every year - without fail - they bring up the idea of spending billion$ on a train from Houston to Dallas, or San Antonio to Austin. All of this stuff is about socialist control. The Crust will run everything and the masses will obey. Of course, the Second Amendment has to go, because private ownership of firearms is not compatible with socialism. The State is everything, and anything that could resist the will of the State (guns, religion, free speech) has to be crushed out of existence. The government is already trying to do away with cash. Every purchase or sale will be electronic and tracked by the State. Anyone who resists will simply lose their ability to buy food with a click of a keyboard.

Now, having ranted a bit, why is EV not reasonable. You cannot burn fuel in a location 100 miles away, spin a generator, go through a transformer, send the electricity through wires, run through another transformer, then charge a battery and be more efficient than just burning the fuel in the vehicle. The supporters of EV point out these great efficiency numbers, because EV isn't running when you're stopped at a red light. If you look at ONLY the vehicles, the numbers support EV. If you go back and look at all the transmission and transformer losses, it doesn't add up. Then the supporters point out wind power and solar power - but those projects are not reducing the cost of energy. Maybe if the country constructed a bunch of nuclear plants - but mention that and watch the Lefties scream in agony!

You might be able to convince me otherwise when you can get on an EV plane to Chicago without fear.

When stopped in traffic and at red lights the EV must use battery power to operate lights, wipers, heat or air conditioning and other demands on its electrical system. Their efficiency numbers don't use realistic driving conditions.

My lightning goes into production this week

with price protection and 7500 tax rebate my out the door price for a loaded pro is $38,300

My plan is to get RolCoal for the plates.

and I am getting it for the HP trk and 1 gear trans.
I would need the long range option. That is not available on the Pro. To get extended range it starts at just over 80k.

If you can order a fleet vehicle you can get the pro in ER

Not sure of the price of that now with all the increases though.

and the other 80Ish miles per charge don't matter for me. Now the gain of torq and speed over 60mph would be nice.

Kind of fitting this post ;)

The German coal mine Garzweiler, operated by energy company RWE, admits the situation appears to be "paradoxical" — sacrificing one energy source for another — but defended the decision as necessary to strengthen supplies amid the ongoing energy crisis, Oilprice.com reported.

"We realize this comes across as paradoxical," RWE spokesperson Guido Steffen said in a statement. "But that is as matters stand."

    Id drive an EV pickup.
A pickup is the worst use case for EV. Every time I use my pickup I'm moving shit around; usually over several hours. Moving any kind of payload kills the range, and even at level 3 charging it takes way to long to refuel.

The only practical use case for EV is as a city commuter car.

I’d like one in a few years when the bugs are worked out. Teslas are nice but I only like the bigger S model, which is pricey and I prefer a SUV anyway. I really like the Rivians but again, pretty pricey and it’s not very big.

I’d guess tax credits and accelerated depreciation contribute to some of that decisioning.

Then realize many service fleets are good fits for EV use cases because of low payload requirements coupled with idle time at a job site doesn’t really put a lot of demand on the power supply; at end of day vehicle goes back to charge overnight at off-peak rates.

But the first time a Mr Plumber asks to plug in to recharge the EV will be the last time.
