Hey all, I'm thinking about picking up a fixed blade knife for general use on a hiking trip I have coming up. Here's what I'm looking for:

    • Fixed blade
    • Around 5" blade length (so I can carry it in Texas if I want).
    • Durable design: full tang, decent steel.
    • A sheath that won't fall apart if I get it wet.
    • Somewhat light weight, I want this as a "personal" knife on my belt. I'll have an LMF II in my pack for hatchet work. So I don't need a machete or something built to baton through oak logs. Already going to have that in my pack!
    • Looking to spend around $80-$100. Part of it is I'm not made of money and that ties into how reluctant I'd be to put a $400 knife to the kind of abuse I usually put my blades through.
    I'm open to suggestions.

Look on youtube at nutnfancy's knife reviews. He does an awsome job on his reviews. Alot of people dont like him for some reason, but I think as a reviewer he is great.

I have the 5.11 tanto surge, very thick and sturdy blade 5.5 overall. Downside is setup for Molle carry, no provision for belt carry.

The best bang for the buck will be a Remington brand knife from academy. $20.00. It will hold up to the tasks you want to do and more.
Buy a good diamond sharpener for it and get a Swiss army knife and you will have 90% of your cutting chores taken care of.
For the other 10% of what you may face you will need a $400 custom made knife or a camp axe (also sold at academy $25.00).

Personally, I feel Busse Combat makes the best fixed blade knives that money can buy. However, they can get expensive($200+ to thousands). I have beat the shit and abused my Busse SAR 6 and I have, as the company motto states, NO REGRETS. Busse has a cheaper line called swamprat/scrapyard, that offer knives that can withstand LOTS of torture for a smaller price. You can save further money by keeping an eye on bladeforums buy/sell/trade....

Here is the specific Busse/Swampyard forum:
Busse / Swamprat / Scrapyard Knives For Sale

And here is the production knives for sale by individuals(not dealers) and you can find some amazing deals here:

It's less than 5.5", but wouldn't it be considered a "bowie" knife?

I say if you want to carry a decent knife in TX, you should get your CHL even if you don't want to carry a gun. Just carry a little mini .22 revolver along with your hand sword

Chris Reeve does a nice blade. In the "personal carry" (as opposed to duty gear), this one is slick:

Na arms has some very interesting little guns that have caught my eye. Some of the 4" guns with millet sights and good grips are said to be quite accurate. One day I might have to have one in my bob.
