My understanding was that they took a vote this time, but the article doesn't specifically say that as far as I can see. Good question.

And of course the Saxet folks coming out and saying "we're okay with a private background check requirement, we just can't enforce it" is okay? If that's their stance, let em burn.

No vote. they did not renew the contract since the Saxet guys would not comply with the counties wishes. I say good on the Saxet guy standing their ground. Travis county commisioners are a bunch of bullies.

It is so untenable when you have portions of a political body refusing to follow the law or laws being on the books that people can choose to enforce at will.

The Travis County commissioners got emboldened by their leader in Washington. This is the same way the pro abortion crazies shut down the TXlege. If they cant get what they want legally and through the process...they will do so "by any means necessary".

I wondered about that to. It could have been some attempt at PR by the Saxet promoter, or it could have been something taken completely out of context (or outright fabricated) by the reporter. At the end of the day, Saxet refused to back down, so I give them the benefit of the doubt.

This is just speculation. But I know in the past I've signed documents completely unenforceable purely to get what I want...

Are you suggesting that Saxet should have signed a contract agreeing to require background checks on private sales, then intentionally not enforced it at the show? There are so many things wrong with that I don't even know where to start.

i dont like gun shows so could care less about this, but obviously this topic struck a nerve with a lot of you. no one should be shocked by this, though.

would make you wonder why the "other side" isn't using the left's tactics. they work. instead they continue to play little goodie two shoes, the other side should be out there doing what the left does. for a bunch of beta males, butches and illegals, they sure know how to get their way.

Just speculating on why we were hearing that they were ok with private sale background checks.

Oh, I see. Well, as you say, it's all speculation but based on dealings I've had with the media in a past life, I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that Saxet was misquoted or taken out of context. I can't imagine Saxet would risk alienating its customer base by agreeing to background checks on private sales. Not to mention all the other counties in which it conducts shows would surely demand the same.

SAXET offered to make background checks available for private sellers but stated they could not enforce every private sale do a background check. It would be voluntary on the part of the buyer and seller.

Agree. I've been listening to WOAI on iheart radio. WOAI is a san anton station. They played a snippet from a Bexar county rep who said these requirements were a good ideal for county owned properties. This shit is spreading. This Bexar county rep actually stated statistics about mentally ill people and how the background check would help ensure no mentally unstable people got guns. I hate to say it, there's lots of mentally ill people without a criminal history. Using the FBI (or ATF or what ever you want to call it) background check to weed out mentals ain't going to work.

Government involvement in our private transactions is further destroying our civil liberties.

KXAN is the call sign of an Austin TV station, FYI.

This is probably what they were talking about. I have no problem with making background checks available to private sales......as long as it is voluntary.
