ImVho, a 12, 16 or 20 gauge double-barrel or pump gun, loaded with #4 Buck or larger shot, is THE REAL DEAL for home/farm DEFENSE, out to normal SELF-DEFENSE range.
(On our family farm & based on recent "incidents" of frequent night-prowling, I keep an AR loaded & "quickly available", especially after the Chief Deputy said that he believes that the thugs are "likely armed & very dangerous" - I have the feeling that he has a real good idea of who at least one of them is.)
NOTE: Given that essentially every adult in the area near our farm is ARMED TO THE TEETH, some criminal or group of thieves is/are going to end up GYD or seriously wounded, as EVERYBODY there is WATCHING for the night-prowling thieves.

Hard to beat an 870. Be careful on the pump action. There are some thugs out there who will actually go the sound of a pump schucking.
