I don't ride. Never have. Heard stories all my life from friends and other cops who rode...about 4-wheeled drivers making it dangerous. I'm strongly for MC riders in MOST cases...BUT

This case is simply about what is the law...and did he obey it. Looks like he didn't ...looks like Texas law says it's illegal. So band together and CHANGE the law...but until it's legal...don't do it. Other drivers won't expect it to happen, knowing it's not legal, and problems will come up. It's only about the law.
The case for carrying a gun has been the same way. We should be able to...nothing wrong with doing it...but as long as the law says don't...you just tell the guy don't do it...you enforce the law, not the wishes of the public.
I don't know the numbers but I'll bet there're enough riders in Texas to get it passed if they want it.

Many, many years ago when I went from dirt bikes to street bikes, an biker told me to ride like everyone in cars were trying to kill me! Keep your eyes open, pay attention and always look for ways to get out of trouble.

I only had to incidents with vehicles all the years I rode street bikes. (Dirt bikes don't count, and are whole nuther story!) The worst I got injured out of those two, I ended up with three broke fingers.

MC are a unique vehicle with a unique ability to safely (when done within reason) move between other vehicles moving slowly or stopped on the road. Why should they wait when they made a choice to ride a smaller vehicle that has a unique ability. It is akin socialism saying you shouldn't get more than the "standard wage" even though you went to college.

The rules of the road are there to keep people safe, not to hold someone on a motorcycle back just because you can't do what a MC can in a car. Lane splitting and filtering to the front at lights in one of the things I enjoy most on my dirt bike (plated) trips to Cali.

This particular turd wasn't doing it safely, but I wish it was explicitly legal here in Texas. Other than the "but I can't in my car" or "but thats not fair" I have yet to hear a real valid argument against lane splitting.

I have seen too many close calls with a splitter and cars changing lanes.

What makes you special that you get to cut to the front of the line?

I have to agree with @cycleguy2300 on this. If it's not illegal to lane-split, and the rider can do it safely, then more power to them.

Meh? I never did lane-split because there were very seldom places that traffic occurred to lane-split and that I rode larger street bikes that would have been difficult or too large to do it safely.

Oh, I dont think I'm special. Everyone on a motorcycle should be able to filter we intentionally chose a vehicle with the ability to safely move through lemmings stuck in cars and that your only argument is that "but I'm in a car and I cant"

Remember when El Rushbo would talk about the left wanting people to be equally miserable? Yeah, this is another example of that...

Who cares about lane splitters. Carry insc and dont be a dick when you sideswipe or rear end someone cause even in LA no one expects you and they arent trying to kill you by positioning themselves to see what's ahead.

Riding a motorcycle is a special risk all it's own. It's yours to take.

Oh, flashing lights and sirens are cheating. Lol

Never once said "I'm in a car and I can't". You are making up stuff again.

Did say it runs a risk of damaging someone's car during a lane change (ain't worried about the bike, the idiot had it coming). Did ask what makes you special so that you think it is okay to break the law (we ain't in Cali) and run to the front of the line.

Trust me, flashy lights and a siren just make people act dumb. Some move left, some move right, some just stop where they are at, some just keep on driving...

That's been true since I knew...early 70s when you'd turn on your siren and lose 10mph in speed...folks would do the stupid in a lot of ways...we learned early to just navigate through traffic...most of them never saw you till you passed them, so they didn't slam on their brakes, jerk into the next lane, or slow down so they could stare at you in the rearview muttering "What'd I do? I wasn't speedin....."

    OK, not legal, yet.
Texas Senate Bill 228 was introduced on December 9, 2016, and if passed would make it legal for motorcycles to ride between lanes of traffic on limited-access or controlled-access highways during periods of traffic congestion at a speed not more than 5 mph above the speed of other traffic, and only if that traffic is moving at 20 mph or less.
Still not passed., Thought it was.
