I am sure they have dedicated traffic units that officers stay productive at, to generate extra revenue via citations. I doubt their average patrol offers do traffic stops.
All traffic enforcement units were disbanded, including motors, Commercial vehicle enforcement and the DWI unit

    Parks/wilderness units were disbanded

Many of the regional tac units responsible for higher risk apprehensions, drug and OC investigations were reduced in size

The city put funding back on paper, but without cadets in the academy we cannot get officers to fill those positions. APD is staffed at 1995 levels and communications (911 call takers and dispatch) is just as short handed.

It is a recipe for disaster and the possibility of a city wide breakdown of law and order is actually becoming a scenario that seems more plausible with day and each retirement.

I'm with the, "let them stew," crowd. One of the things that most people don't realize, is how difficult it is to hire new officers. Having 100 people apply, boils down to maybe 1 officer getting hired, 2 out of 3 hired and put in the academy don't graduate, 1 in 3 makes probation, and 1 out of 3 will be retained for 5 years or more. Losing 180-230 officers (and this number probably means a lot of Sgt and above) will reshape the department for decades.
That's why they are lowering the standards in many cities. What can go wrong?

That is a recipe for disaster.

Being reactive only and not proactive, makes things worst. Special Units can provide expertise, save time, and boost moral/competition to do better.

more DPS troopers in Austin means less speed traps. Frankly I like DPS but most of the time they are pulling people over and giving tickets in places like Temple (where the speed limit is 65 on I-35 instead of 75)
That's chickenshit policing. At least in Austin they might get to be more constructive.

Does that mean that there are no APD vehicles patrolling the streets and I could just speed through Awwsten on I-35 at 100mph without getting pulled over?
    #AskingForAFriend of course.

they wouldnt even respond to a break in where my friend's gun was stolen. I think you're safe going 100 as long as DPS or a Travis County Sheriff doesnt catch you

Unless you’re willing to do that on the shoulder, you would probably have to shoot for 2:00 to 3:00 am or the traffic will prevent you from going over 40 mph.

While I would never suggest or support illegal activities, most APD cops you see are already assigned to a call and it takes a lot to justify preempting for traffic. ymmv and DPS gets boners when they see someone speeding so...

Back when I worked nights and had time to run traffic, I'd sit in a hidey-hole and laser or radar folks on I-35... 100mph was the number I waited for and it rarely took more than 5 or 10 minutes.

Troopers made 52 felony and 31 misdemeanor arrests in Austin from March 30 to April 3, seized 174 grams of cocaine, 40 grams of heroin and wrote 765 tickets. DPS has made 1,570 traffic stops and conducted 15 crash investigations. Troopers have also recovered six stolen vehicles and seized 127,415 grams of methamphetamine and 11 firearms, according to new data.

oh yeah ACLU and Justice Coalition are whining that DPS should not be patrolling Austin

UmmmTnHawk... you obvously have not been to Austin (AKA San Francisco South) Voters of Austin are mostly socialist liberal nuts. Hell they even voted to raise their property taxes for a public transportation system that will not get built for 15 years at least, and now has tripled in price in last four years....

    With the stress on VOTERS!

The ”socialist liberal nuts” are the ones that vote. Too many residents don’t care ENOUGH.

“Without federal and state races on the ballot, Austinites don't vote in local elections.

“Typically 1 in 7 Austin voters participates when only City Council races are on the ballot.”

    Somewhere in Texas!
A few weeks ago I ran into a very nice APD officer at the Balcones Texas Oncology Location. We spoke for about 15 minutes or so, the DA sucks was my takeaway. He was not very happy trying to do his job, but the prosecutors were turning criminals loose. I wish this gentleman the best.
