Wouldn't use ammonia on anything with lens coatings.

Ah, yeah, sorry my brain forgot to add the sarcasm to your post, here I just thought you were dumb.
Zeiss lens cleaner(available from optometrists shop @ many Walmart’s) + microfiber cloth is all you need.
Microfiber cloth is very good at getting heavy residue. But I would suggest getting the Zeiss lense cleaner in the mister bottle, saturate the lenses, give it a few seconds to soften gunk, then clean/polish with microfiber cloth. Might have to repeat multiple times but there is nothing involved that will harm the lenses.Yeah, I have the Zeiss towelettes, for eyeglasses, but I need to get the extra thick dirt off first, I believe.
Cleaning glass? Ammonia and newspaper always seemed to work well.

Car glass doesn't have multi-coating to reduce reflection and glare and chromatic aberration.Man I’ve cleaned a lot of car glass this way when I was a kid. The glass would be spotless but I was covered in ink from the news paper. It will clean the shit out of glass.

Oh yeah, I know that one and have used it plenty. But it's not getting anywhere near my optical glass. For car or home glass, newspaper is one of the best things to use to clean them. Lint-free. Old car detailer's tricks!

Yep, really.Really?
You said it to be funny?
Knowing that if I was dumb enough to try your "suggestion", it could damage the lens?
Some days, you could be right.Ah, yeah, sorry my brain forgot to add the sarcasm to your post, here I just thought you were dumb.
See post #21.Ammonia can remove some lens coatings. That's why they recommend never using any glass cleaner with ammonia to clean eyewear. Scope lens have coatings many times too, and they could very well be harmed by a cleaner with ammonia in it.
See post #21.
The reality is the question was "what is the best way to clean glass?" All answers thus far have been good ones.. Perhaps the question should have been: "whats the best way to clean some scrungy ass scope lenses?"
